The first half is all the books I read & recommend.
The second half are books I started reading / read but do not think highly enough of to recommend (although some I had to finish simply because I got too invested in what was happening and needed to know the ending).
No book links because I thoroughly encourage you to use a library or a local, independent bookseller and absolutely by all means possible, avoid Indigo/Chapters, and Amazon.
If you need one that delivers in Canada, I very much like McNally Robinson. They can order any book you like.
WHAT I RECOMMEND
I was super, crazy busy this month. I simply didn’t have time to read as much as I typically do. I will have to get back into it in October!
An arrow to the moon: X.R. Pan
Amazing book. Chinese myth meets Romeo and Juliet. I couldn’t put it down, it was fantastic. It is set in modern day times, with two star-crossed teenagers, attracted to each other with no rhyme or reason. Really a great book to read.
The Astonishing Color of After: X.R. Pan
Trigger Warning: Taking one’s life and depression.
This is the best book I have read in a very long time. It was extremely painful to read, mind you.. the subject matter at least, but the writing, the story of the daughter woven in with some fantasy.. it made it really hard to put down. Essentially, her mother reincarnates as a big red bird to her, and she goes through memories and life with her mother. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I thought about it long after I finished it. She is a gifted author.
Dance of Thieves + Vow of Thieves: Mary. E. Pearson
A great fantasy read, about saving kingdoms and falling in love. I couldn’t put it down. I especially loved the main character being such a skillful thief, she was obviously my favourite.
Mrs. Jeffries Books 1-2-3-4-5-6: Emily Brightwell
There are a lot more in the series, but I HIGHLY recommend this series. It is a cosy murder mystery set of books, about a housekeeper who is brilliant (widowed, and formerly married to a detective), and she and the household help nudge her employer (a detective), along in his cases (he was formerly a clerk and then became this crime-solving machine).
REALLY a good read. Highly recommend.
