Week of Money: Where work just goes insane
??:?? — I wake up and Little Bun wakes up too. I grab his milk, and ask him for the time (I can’t see a thing in the morning, I’m blind as a bat). He tells me it is 5:17. Kids ARE useful sometimes.
5:16 a.m. — After his milk he dozes back to sleep in my arms but then wakes up in a panic with a “Mommy?????”..when I move my arm to get up and get ready, I whisper and kiss him, telling him I’m not leaving, I’m just getting ready. He nods, rolls over and goes to sleep.
6:02 a.m. — My partner is amazed he is back to sleep. I’m not. He has been really pushing bedtimes lately and needs to sleep earlier. We have to get back into our pre-family-visit routine again. It is so hard to roll it back. Sigh.
6:20 a.m. — I get ready, and wanted to wear this printed silk watercolour tank but it is too revealing for work in the sense that if I bent over, you’d see everything. I switch it out for a more modest map printed silk tank from Carven <3.. great pieces no matter how expensive are worth it if you constantly wear and reach for them. I got this one secondhand for $50 instead of $300 or whatever it cost at retail (hundreds!) so I am super happy.
6:55 a.m. — I wait for Little Bun but he shows no signs of waking up so I wait for an opportunity and pounce on him when he stirs.. I am all chirpy and he looks at me, gives a huge groan, plies his face back into the pillow and squeals: I am so sleeeeepyyyyyy!!!!! … too bad kid, I have to work. I play-haul him out of bed and change him on the bed for preschool. Time to get back on track.
7:12 a.m. — We head out the door, I get into work and start on the 16 emails in my inbox.
8:20 a.m. — I take a break for tea and SOMEONE STOLE MY CUP. WTF. I’m annoyed.
9:40 a.m. — I grab another cup and vow to hunt them down.
10:28 a.m. — I head off to a meeting after solving 3 issues.
11:55 a.m. — Back at my desk, I check my emails quickly then head to lunch. I want to buy some bubble bath and swabs today.. I won’t have time after work because Little Bun has to get fed and then let his stomach settle before heading off to soccer practice, which my partner says he hates because it isn’t as fun as one-on-one with him.
12:34 p.m. — Okay so I am not going out for any break. I end up working through lunch.
3:00 p.m. — I skip my team meeting and work at my desk – this is more important.
4:12 p.m. — I leave immediately and snag Little Bun who is in a GREAT mood.
4:49 p.m. — I then get back home with him, warn him about soccer coming up, he nods because it is in his iPad Calendar so he knows what is coming.
5:28 p.m. — I take off my makeup, change my clothes, plan my outfit for tomorrow, and then start laundry.
6:15 p.m. — I sew up Little Bun’s airplane shirt where the flap after 2 wears is already coming undone (shoddy tailoring, really…).
6:49 p.m. — I do all the dishes while my noodles are cooking, and will dry them later. I relax down to a few episodes of Top Chef (my guilty pleasure) while eating my noodles. THIS IS MY THING. My secret (single) behaviour when I was alone, I would eat my food while watching TV shows and pretend I was eating what was on the show. I’m lame, I know.
7:34 p.m. — Whoa, I have so much to get done tomorrow. How am I going to do all of this?
8:19 p.m. — Three books, 8 math equations (he is really loving division lately..), and bedtime.
??:?? — Little Bun has to go to the bathroom. He hates it is night time and therefore not “milk time”, when I usher him back to bed, but I rub his back and he falls asleep almost instantly.
??:?? — Insomnia. I cannot go back to sleep. I lie there and my brain starts working. STUPID BRAIN. SHUT UP. STOP WORKING.
6:00 a.m. — I wake up. Not tired, but feeling fuzzy. I switch out my top twice, until I am satisfied with the look.. sometimes things are too loose everywhere and I feel weird and feel like I look weird, which means I don’t feel comfortable the whole day.
7:09 a.m. — Little Bun waves bye-bye. OMG. REALLY? No tears. I love him so much.
7:34 a.m. — Work.
12:28 p.m. — Lunch. I pick up some milk and some cherries. $19.18
2:10 p.m. — “Few Minutes Meeting” my $#(&#%….. now I just learned the project timeline has not only moved up, I am now getting overloaded with MORE work and MORE stuff to get done and no one else can help me? WTF. WTF. Also, no one is appreciating the fact that I am OFFERING to work THROUGH my vacation. I could just say: No can do. Bye bye. but I am offering to help out. No thanks for this? I am not asking for the moon here, but I am not OBLIGATED to work. I’m a freelancer.
4:25 p.m. — I don’t stop working and I finally bolt even though I have a ton to do.
4:58 p.m. — I make it home and start on laundry, soaking my stinky stuff (has a strange, musty wet dog smell).
6:15 p.m. — I make noodles.
6:20 p.m. — Noodles done. YUM!
6:37 p.m. — I get ready to prepare my day for tomorrow — laying out my dress, etc.
7:56 p.m. — Time for bed. We do a bit of math and then read two books. Little Bun is just EAGER to learn his Times Tables, so I teach him the 1X table which is easy, and we start on the 2X. He doesn’t want to sleep now.
6:07 a.m. — I wake up before Little Bun. I get ready for work and hear a squeal, so I run back and pat his back and grab his milk.
7:59 a.m. — At work, non-stop meetings, ad hoc meetings, questions.. my brain is FRIED.
8:38 a.m. — I try to take a break, and feel exhausted. I need to go out and relax.
12:09 p.m. — Finish scarfing down my lunch. I head to Sephora.
12:28 p.m. — I pick up a restock on my Coola loves there. I am obsessed with their Coola makeup setting spray in SPF 30 for a quick refresh before I head out into the sun. I buy the body sunscreen SPF 30 spray in Citrus Mimosa (smells the best), and the CoverFX matte setting powder (I tried Kat Von D before and like it, but want to see what else is out there – I’m fickle until I find a true Holy Grail!) — $160.57
12:56 p.m. — Back at the office, I work until it’s time to go home.
4:06 p.m. — Time to go home. I head home, and Little Bun barrels into my arms, squealing happily.
5:15 p.m. — I slowly get undressed, change into house clothes, remove makeup, and ask if Little Bun wants to stay in the bathroom with me or stay in the bedroom while I shower. He opts for the bedroom, and says proudly: I will read my books to myself in the bedroom!
6:20 p.m. — Oh. Out of my favourite lotion for my body. I love it because it is organic, made here locally in Montreal and smells like lavender but mixed in with peonies and vanilla notes. It is truly a splurge because I go through a tub every 2 months or so and it is $30 a tub. I just love it though, it makes my shower so much better especially since I slather it on OVER a coating of this organic rosehip oil.
7:15 p.m. — Dinner of marinated lemon oil chicken and herbs on the grill, salad, bread.
8:33 p.m. — Time for bed. I am leaving the dishes for another day.
6:00 a.m. — Slept.. GREAT. Little Bun has been in such a good mood lately, he has slept well.. thank goodness.
7:02 a.m. — He wave and waves and waves goodbye until the door slowly closes. Then he asks for 10 hugs and 10 kisses JUST as I am about to close the door. I give them to him and then leave.
7:39 a.m. — At work I literally do not stop, not even for lunch.
11:08 p.m. — I eat lunch during a meeting.
2:28 p.m. — I call the tax agency and work out the payments — it applied to the wrong account so it looked like I owed them money!!! Phew. Got that sorted out.
4:14 p.m. — I pick up Little Bun to go to the pharmacy. He loves playing with the lipsticks, organizing and arranging them.
4:33 p.m. — I pick up a lighter shade in Dermablend in Bisque (my HOLY GRAIL foundation that gives me perfect, perfect skin that looks incredible), because my skin has not tanned so far this summer so my colour looks a bit too dark. I also get a free Dermablend makeup remover sample which I later try but don’t love because the oil cleansing removal method, and then a cleanser afterwards, works PERFECTLY to remove every trace of makeup. When I used the Dermablend stuff, it left some traces of mascara underneath my eyes. $50.59
4:51 p.m. — We go to another pharmacy and I pick up a very pretty figgy plum looking lipstick from Maybelline in Deepest Cherry on sale $6.89
5:13 p.m. — Little Bun loves helping me pick out a colour — NO MOMMY! This is too brown! Too pink! This is too red! I don’t like that!
5:37 p.m. — At home, we organize ourselves, I take off my makeup, unpack my bags, try to make lists of what I am doing this week and prepping for our vacation — tying up loose ends on the credit card payments to make sure I don’t forget to clear the balances.
6:20 p.m. — Time for dinner — super light today. Just strawberries and cherries, and a banana. I am not very hungry and neither is Little Bun.
7:11 p.m. — I log in and try to resist online shopping. I have been pretty good lately when I receive payments to NOT SPEND IT. Little Bun watches nursery rhymes (he loves Lizzy the Dog) and sits behind me on the chair, hugging my back like a koala cub, and wraps his arms around my stomach. I love this feeling of pure love from this child. It is worth it all.
8:00 p.m. — Time for bed. We get ready, and he has some sort of scrape on his bum where he apparently scratched himself violently. It looks like he dragged his bare bum across asphalt and scraped off a palm-sized layer of skin, almost drawing blood. I am HORRIFIED. I almost burst into tears, what happened!?!?…. I can’t get it out of him but I suspect he violently scratched himself.
6:10 a.m. — I wake up before Little Bun again and run back to him when I hear him squeal. I wanted to wear a certain shirt today but then decided it was too tight and too fitted for such a hot day, so I switch it out for a loose black colourblocked silk shirt from Grana — love their affordable, quality silks!
7:39 a.m. — Work. I sit out front and scroll through my emails, cleaning up things, making notes before I head in.
8:08 a.m. — I work NON.STOP. This is insane. Work has just all come at the same time. WTF.
12:04 p.m. — Time for lunch. I head out for a goodbye lunch for someone, and have a DELICIOUS meal… mushroom tagliatelle and meatballs. OMFG. SO. GOOD. I am definitely coming back. $23.81
1:17 p.m. — Back at the office. Work work work. Stupid meetings. The more meetings I have, THE LESS TIME I HAVE TO WORK, FOLKS.
2:30 p.m. — Cannolis! As a goodbye treat! YUM. I eat one, and my friend guilts me into eating two because she can’t eat her second one and doesn’t want to toss it. Why the #(%* did you take it then??? I hate wasting food so I eat it.
3:34 p.m. — I head home, hoping Little Bun will head out to play soccer with his father. I wait for the email. In the meantime I drop by my neighbour’s (I owe her $10 for what I bought), and pick up books for Little Bun. -$10
5:00 p.m. — I finish chatting with her, Little Bun is not going to play soccer 🙁 I did get a few book recommendations.. and I LOVE the style of this book – Little Bun would love this.
5:24 p.m. — Dinner of light soup and fruit. I don’t really feel that hungry.
6:56 p.m. — I go berserk and pick out pretty much every one of these awesome flap books for Little Bun. They look like fun and are interesting to read and will help him. I end up buying the following… $151.93
- Usborne Times Table
- Usborne See inside Maths
- Usborne Computers & Coding
- Usborne How things work
- Usborne Airport
- Usborne Cars
- Usborne Trains
8:19 p.m. — Time for bed. I am really tired….
6:00 a.m. — I start working early — vacuum the entire apartment, steam mop, do the dishes, steam all of my clothes that I have left wrinkled and start laundry.
8:32 a.m. — Done. Time to make some noodles for breakfast. I’m addicted to this stuff <3 .. while I am doing that, I’m watching Sebastian Maniscalco – Aren’t you embarassed — one of my FAVOURITE comedians of all time. I did see the Netflix Comedy lineup but I wasn’t really blown away. This guy is funny though…
9:37 a.m. — I go to dry the steam mop heads but they are still DIRTY. I wash them again with a good dose of Oxiclean…
9:42 a.m. — Little Bun gets bored of videos and starts playing with his train and truck. He is also obsessed with this book that makes little chick noises – Piu piu!! – this book come night time is going to end up in the dumpster y’all, I am just saying.
9:45 a.m. — I flip over to Comedians in Cars getting Coffee (I really do enjoy Jerry Seinfeld). I watch the episode with Sarah Jessica Parker — I love her. Not just from Sex and the City, but as a person, her personality from what I have seen so far. It is also amazing how much she has worked to keep her body so toned and slim. That is dedication folks. I have none of that. A little bit of flab is my body’s middle name.
10:17 a.m. — I get ready to go out — I actually have a lot to get done today plus an appointment for my laser hair removal again under my arms..
11:29 a.m. — My one goal for today is to eat this KitKat. Yep, low expectations are my jam when I get a break from Little Bun.
12:08 p.m. — Little Bun squeals and hugs on tight to my legs. My partner has to forcibly peel him off and as I leave, I don’t hear any crying or squealing which means he got excited about an activity — repotting the huge plant I suppose, with this special device that will water it while we are away on vacation…
2:15 p.m. — I go through the underarm laser, and do my pedicure (choosing a super bright gorgeous magenta pink from Essie called V.I. Please this time), and I love the girl who always handles me. I book a brow tint, pedicure and the laser for legs the week before I leave. $201.43
Which from the stock photo above looks nothing like that on my actual nails because it turns out to be more of a berry purple hue. Sometimes it looks very red instead of pink.
No offence to my feet.. but I think toes in general and feet are kind of fugly. Anyone with me on this?
3:24 p.m. — Traffic is HORRIFIC. I hit a Joe Fresh to try and wheedle some exchanges out of them — my mother bought these clothes a size too small for Little Bun and I need to exchange them for larger sizes so that he can grow into them and maybe pick different pieces because sharks are really scary and not at all cool.
4:19 p.m. — Exchange done — they are so nice! I leave with the larger sizes, all mostly striped items. Odd looking stripes but.. whatever. He isn’t going for the cover of Vogue.
4:38 p.m. — I watch Comedians in Cars getting coffee with Jerry and Aziz Ansari — he is so cool. Love him!
4:38 p.m. — I pick up another pack of these Hollywood Secrets – Garment Shields because I used them on my fitted, button up shirts and they worked well enough. I wouldn’t say they’re a Holy Grail, but I’m a total Sweaty Betty in the sense that I sweat at the thought of sweating…eating hot soup is enough to make my forehead prickle in sweat and my upper lip break out and glisten. I sweat during WINTER, that is how open my pores are. $16.10
Now that you have lots of TMI, I bought these Hollywood Garment Shields initially to try and save myself from underarm embarrassment and I have to say that on my silk shirts and things that I have concerns about sweat stains, they work GREAT. Of course, if the shirt is sheer, you will see the shape of them outlined underneath your armpits as they are quite large, but as long as your arms are down, you’re fine. Just keep your arms down, is what I am saying.
At the end of the day, it can be a bit tricky to peel off if it has absorbed a lot of sweat, but not impossible, and thus far on my delicate silks it has NOT torn or ruined any of them and I have near ripped them off my shirts.
For the people saying this stuff does NOT stick to silk, I have no idea what they are using but this stuff sticks to silk almost like glue. I’m half afraid to take it off at the end of the day because it is SO WELL stuck on. Did they remove the tape? I’m curious as to whether or not they know how to apply this product carefully — it is just a sticker for your shirt… at the underarms part..
5:27 p.m. — I head home for dinner and to relax. I’ll do all my returns for Banana Republic and Gap next week because more stuff (*cough*) is coming in the mail — I am trying different sizes… to see if I feel better in them.
6:18 p.m. — Ah! My Banana Republic utility shirts came in. The Small in Petite fits me and I like it, but am waiting for a sale. I love them though, the buttons are COVERED BUTTONS (omg what a nice style detail) and it is a nice weight, a good army green khaki colour, and a nice shirt.
If I paired them with these incredible Banana Republic Tencel pants which I am keeping, I think I could put on a green cap with a red star and become a Comrade…… 😛 .. all jokes aside, I love a good strong army green colour and when it shows up in one season, I have to buy it or else regret it for the next 5-10 years while I wait patiently for the colour to come back into style. That is how insane I am.
6:22 p.m. — My partner heads out to pick up bread.
8:21 p.m. — Finally get around to eating that delicious grilled, marinated garlic & soya sauce chicken I had been smelling in the fridge all week. OMG. YUM. Could have done with more salad though. :-\
9:36 p.m. — I wrangle him into pyjamas and we all go to sleep.
??:?? — Kick in the face.
??:?? — Potty run.
6:30 a.m. — Little Bun is still conked out. No wonder, we slept LATE. I try to be as quiet as possible.
6:37 a.m. — Quick shower — I’d leave it until he wakes up but I feel too gross to wait.
6:59 a.m. — I get out, dry off, lotion myself with oil and then a cream (double moisturizer!), and then make a bowl of green tea matcha.
7:15 a.m. — I charge up my Anker portable 10,000 3.0 battery charger; I took the 3.0 charger because I plan on buying the newest iPhone when it releases this autumn so I can have a killer portable camera when I am out and about…. This battery charger was very useful yesterday, I didn’t have to search for an outlet OR bring anything but this and a cable to charge. I walked around while using this device, with the battery in my pocket.
7:23 a.m. — Little Bun is up! I grab his milk, he is in a good mood and I am about to take him out… It looks dark and cloudy, and it looks like train but I don’t see any rain…. necessarily.
8:08 a.m. — I head out with Little Bun and get a matcha green tea latte with my Rewards but later regret it because it was far too much. I take a turkey bacon sandwich (lower calorie) and ask for no sugar in my tea (trying to pinch calories). $5.11 (with 1 Free Starbucks Reward)
8:40 a.m. — We go by a boutique to pick up some cream but they open in 45 minutes so we head into the metro instead. $2.75
9:45 a.m. — In the metro, Little Bun rides all the way to the end of the other line with me and then we ride back. That was LONG. I’m feeling a bit nauseous actually and I think we will stick to train transfers to give me a break from actually being on the train.
10:34 a.m. — Ever since I stopped taking public transport almost exclusively I am always humbled and grateful that I can afford and own a car to not have to take the bus or the train as my only means of transport. I’m taking the train because it is a cheap activity! O_o
10:47 a.m. — We get back to the car and head over to the boutique where I buy two tubs of cream because I’m really slathering this stuff on. I ought to make a list of what my new extraneous products are that I use and buy on a regular basis like monthly pedicures during the summer, my Bio-Sil and Bio-K products and my lavender creams that I go through like water… $64.40
11:44 a.m. — Back at home I’m starving. That sandwich was nothing, I eat a huge salad and a few eggs and feel better.
12:00 p.m. — We go down for a nap (well I do) and Little Bun crawls and wiggles all over me pretending he wants to sleep on me before I “oy!!” him and he goes to sleep on his side.
2:33 p.m. — We wake up and my partner is out. I do the dishes, dry them while Little Bun watches videos and then we head out.
3:12 p.m. — I return a whackload of clothes at Banana Republic that so very recently went on sale for 50% off (!!!) Instead of asking for for a price adjustment and dealing with people who don’t want to give you money back or anything, I have resigned myself to just returning everything on the original invoice and re-buying it all over again. I’ve had so much hassle from BR in the past that I’ve given up. -$858.31
3:40 p.m. — I drop by The Gap and return those pants too, I prefer the Banana Republic ones. -$26.06
5:37 p.m. — We walk over to a pharmacy so that Little Bun can visit the lipsticks (no joke). I only look at the ones on sale and he very much enjoys re-arranging all of the lipsticks so that the numbers are in their correct position, facing the right way and neat-looking. This is another activity he enjoys and when he finds a lipstick out of place or placed upside down, he gleefully squeals: SOMEONE HAS BEEN VERY SILLY!!!! … and then fixes it.
6:48 p.m. — We go for a little sushi dinner (never again by the way because the lunch menu is reasonable but the night one is not!!!!!). I think all the waiters are amazed I brought a small child to a sushi restaurant, and he behaved, and ate EVERYTHING. $51.58
8:08 p.m. — At home, we calm down, read books, do math, and sleep.
