Style Shopper: M.M. Lafleur Soho Skirt, Taylor Dress 2.0 and Waverly Skirt (Dune Grass, Deep Plum and Boysenberry)

You can read all of my clothing reviews here under Style Shopper.

MM Lafleur is one of my favourite brands to buy clothes from but they are so dang pricey..

I did review one other item before from MM Lafleur called the Catherine 2.0 dress in Midnight Blue and the Lenox Skirt in a double-faced silk in Amaranth.

I am normally a US 4 on bottoms (designer US 4, Banana Republic 2).

I’m an inverted triangle and normally wear an Small or 2 (smallest sizes in all mainstream brands except for designer brands where I usually take a US 4.

I am also 5’6″ and fairly slim overall. Small busted (A cup).

I will say for my shoulders I ALWAYS take a US 6 in designer brands, or a US 4 in Banana Republic for instance, because my shoulders are large and my body is slim.

I am super picky and hate itchy items, too-tight things and anything that doesn’t look or feel expensive and wonderful.

$9 is $90 is $900.

The price makes no difference to me.

MM Lafleur makes the most amazing skirts that are draped and gorgeous.

MM Lafleur Soho Skirt

Our designer took inspiration from the French couturier Madame Grès when constructing this stretchy, sculptural skirt. A fresh update on the classic pencil shape, it’s draped to flatter your natural curves. And did we mention it’s insanely comfortable? We’re obsessed with this super-soft jersey knit fabric, which is made by a family-owned mill in Italy. Shown here with the Blixen top.

95% Viscose, 5% Elastane.
Hand washable. No bleach. Low iron with layer cloth. No tumble dry. Dry clean preferred.

Dune Grass

It looks pretty incredible for plus-size women too with all the draping:

FANTASTIC AS ALWAYS. MM Lafleur kills it, because they have it lined, it drapes gorgeously…

FIT / CUT 5/5

I love how it hides everything. It’s perfect.

The sizing is Small, I’m a US 4 as the body, and it is perfectly fitted. Maybe a little too perfectly fitted. It is small, and I think I would even want to size up to a Medium (which I did in the Rainforest Green colour here).

The colour is Dune Grass and it is sort of a light olive sage-y green…

Even the back was draped:

Perfect draping:

MM Lafleur is a fantastic brand that includes machine-washable and pockets for office wear.

MM Lafleur Taylor Dress

A study in sculptural draping, the Taylor is one of our most figure-flattering designs. With a slim panel of fabric that sweeps from the shoulder and gathers in an artful knot at the waist, this elegant dress is an instant confidence-booster. Oh, and don’t overlook the front pockets, roomy enough to stash your phone, presentation notes, or just-in-case candy.

82% Cellulose Acetate, 18% Polyester.
Machine wash cold. No bleach. Low iron. No tumble dry. Dry cleanable.

Deep Plum

Why wouldn’t I? POCKETS. Machine-washable, gorgeous draping, And in my favourite colour?

Lined, stretchy, draped, and thick. I love this dress.

FIT / CUT 5/5

Gorgeous. I mean… from the sleeveless top (no weird cap sleeve), the drape around the waist, the POCKETS (yes ACTUAL pockets), and the zippered back, this dress hits all the right notes.

I took the US 6 but I could have taken a US 4 because it would have then been fitted and PERFECTLY tailored.

It in fact, in a US 4 would have maybe been a little too fitted to the point where I would feel like I wouldn’t be able to eat a large meal and sit comfortably.

You know?

I think it fits just right. It feels a little large in the armholes and around the shoulder area, and there is plenty of room in the hips and bust but I am normally a US 4, so this is to be expected.

I’d say that even if you are an inverted triangle, it is TRUE TO SIZE, so take your US 4 even if your shoulders are US 6 if you want that tailored, fitted cut where you don’t scarf down at some buffet.

If you want to feel a bit loose, and maybe take in the sides just a pinch but not the waist, then take the US 6 and bring it in to a tailor to try your luck like I will.

This colour is actually true to the online photo. It is a deep plum. Truly.

The deep plum colour is the most true here in this side shot, you can see how it is slightly too big for me as it is a true-to-size dress:

Lots of room in the hips…

Lots of room in the bust, and shoulders… a US 4 would have been perfectly fitted..

Lots of space for the bust, I’m an A-Cup so..

There’s something balletic about the Waverly’s graceful silhouette. Crafted from our super-soft jersey—made at a family-owned mill in Italy—it wraps around the waist to create a figure-flattering shape that drapes beautifully on the hips. Tuck in your favorite top for extra polish, and off you go. Shown here with the Fey top.

92% Viscose, 8% Elastane.

Hand washable. No bleach. Low iron with layering cloth.

Perfect drapey jersey. Lined, fantastic.

FIT / CUT 5/5

I love the tied draping of the waist ties, and it is loose and pretty.

I have to say this small is not at all as tailored or as tight as the Soho skirt even though they are BOTH “Small”, but the waist tie makes up for that in that you can really cinch it tight which I think is the point.

You don’t need to get it tailored but it is NOT as tight as the Soho Skirt, you could even size down I daresy.

COLOUR 4.5/5

It is more of a deep oxidized blood wine red in person than pictured online which looks like a brighter bordeaux / burgundy….. It is darker than it is pictured online, and muddier in colour.

Tied up, the wrapping looks GREAT:

From the back…

The wrapping is easy too:

It is looser than a “Small” in the Soho Skirt.

ACTUALLY quite loose…

I suggested Secrets From Your Sister because I thought your most recent move landed you in Toronto. Your About page doesn’t say. I realize I may have remembered incorrectly. When I searched the blog before my first comment, one search result indicated you live in Quebec, but I could’ve sworn more recently it was Toronto. The posts aren’t dated. I was going off my memory of something in a post from last year.

I’m not sure where you live, so if I’m wrong, please let me know where you are! The important thing is to avoid Victoria’s Secret. Even some lingerie boutique fitters are dishonest when trying to make a sale. I don’t want you sized into a suboptimal size, style, or cut.

Is there a way to tell after doing a blog search which dates a particular post was published? I wondered this before when looking up something on SSS.

Oh, I have been to Secrets from your sister. I lived in Toronto for a while and then moved to Montreal.

No, I removed dates from my post for better search results.. 😉 I will consider however adding it back into the posts page itself somewhere. Let me find the setting.

I DID go for a bra fitting! I bought a few bras and that’s what I am wearing now 🙂 they introduced me to Commando, Hanky Panky and Cosabella as well… all brands I love.

That dress is THE BEST. Wow. You look like a million bucks. What kind of topper would you pair it with? I want that dress but would need a jacket or a silk shirt under.

Why would you wear something under the dress??? Just curious. As for the topper I can wear anything — sweater, leather jacket… I have tons of options

These MM Lafleur reviews are some of my favorites. Such gorgeous colors! I want more clear, pure violets and pinks in my wardrobe. For everyday, I need a back pocket for my phone, so I’m trying to avoid skirts and dresses that only have two front pockets. MM Lafleur’s prices make it easier to refrain. 🙂 I’m also concerned their pieces may be heavy for what they are. I record my clothing items’ weights in a spreadsheet. When I pack for travel, it helps me keep my suitcase below a certain threshold. How heavy would you say MM Lafleur’s pieces are, for what they are?

In your post, you mentioned you wear an A cup bra. I am almost certain you would find a better fit in a different size. For one thing, A cups are different volumes, depending on the band length. An A cup in a 32 band bra, for example, has a smaller volume than an A cup in a 38 band bra. More importantly, I believe your size, based on your outfit shots and self-reported American sizes of 4 and 6, would be in the range of a 30E or 28F. This may sound crazy. I urge you to check out, which was started by a coder, and, before you dismiss what I’m saying. These are the two websites’ sizing pages:

Once I started wearing bras that encased all my breast tissue, including on the sides, my clothes started looking a lot better. A well fitting underwired bra should not hurt or need adjustment during the day. I don’t know if you exclusively wear wireless bras because of past bad experiences with underwired bras. If you had discomfort from underwires in the past, there’s a good chance they just weren’t the right size, style, or fit for your particular breast tissue.

Sorry for the long essay. I just love clothes so much, I want every other woman who loves clothes to know what a difference proper bra fit can make.

I’d say the dresses compared to a regular mainstream dress are far more weightier in that they are lined and DOUBLE lined… so the Taylor 2.0 is not one ply jersey but double, thick and substantial. The pockets in front are draped by the way so even if you drop items in there they are well hidden, and wouldn’t be so obvious.

I hate wired bras for the comfort thing but I’m willing to try a wired one. I can’t imagine my chest being that big!!!!!!! I really have not much up there… but I will go in for a fitting to be sure. Thanks for the push.

If MM Lafleur clothes are heavier than average, I’ll probably pass. Thank you very much for that information! You saved me a ton of money. 🙂

If you want to try brafitting in a store instead of at home, I recommend Secrets From Your Sister. It’s on 560 Bloor St W, in Toronto. They’re open daily.
I’ve never been to your town, but I’ve read many good things about SFYS by highly knowledgeable bra owners. Wearing well fitting bras changed my life for the better.

They’re heavier and the result is that the quality is higher 🙂 I do like a good thick drape, so it’s great for me.
