Style Shopper: Bailey 44 Peekaboo Knotted Cut Out Twist Knot Dress in Wine Burgundy Red

Note: I stitched up that triangle patch in the middle. Read on for more info.

Designed exclusively by and for women, Bailey 44 is a collection of essentials for the modern fashionista. Always made from breathable, lightweight fabrics, Bailey 44 designs are fresh and effortlessly versatile. Each flattering dress, feminine top and tailored pant is meant to go wherever you do – from work to the weekend and beyond.

It actually reminds me of the MM Lafleur dresses that are draped so beautifully and wrapped, but at a fraction of the price being on MAJOR sale ($22.50 CAD plus taxes) instead of $200 USD.

The only thing I hated was that silly triangle of skin showing at the belly. WHY? WHY?

I examined it and decided I could sew it shut. It would look much better and I could take the chance for the $22.50 price.

  • Rayon, spandex
  • Fitted silhouette
  • Knotted front
  • Pullover styling
  • Hand wash

The fabric is very thick, doubly lined, super luxe, very nice for a comfortable, jersey dress. No complaints here at all.

Regular falls 41″ from shoulder
Petite falls 37.5″ from shoulder
Model is 5’10” (in the more profesh photos. I’m only a measly 5’6″)

I am sure the XS would have fit me perfectly or even the S but this particular dress was only on sale because it was an XL…

I wasn’t going to even bother but I thought: What the heck, why not try for $22.50 plus taxes?

The colour I am showing is called Wine but I’d call it a very nice burgundy.

It is very well made. Doubly lined, thick jersey, soft, drapes beautifully.. you can’t go wrong.

Again I removed that silly patch of skin. I don’t get it. I would have rather had my back showing. The stomach is stupid.

It is also an XL so I had some room to pull in the waist a little, and I hacked it myself. I can see the slight flaw in the material wrapping over itself and not quite being perfect. If I wanted to really keep it and spend money on it I am sure a tailor could do a better job for $30.

For now, it’s $0. It doesn’t stick out, doesn’t look stupid and I can belt it to hide the knot.

The fit is great. I am normally a US 4 on bottoms (designer US 4, Banana Republic 2).

I’m an inverted triangle and normally wear an Small or 2 (smallest sizes in all mainstream brands except for designer brands where I usually take a US 4.

I am also 5’6″ and fairly slim overall. Small busted.

I will say for my shoulders I ALWAYS take a US 6 in designer brands, or a US 4 in Banana Republic for instance, because my shoulders are large and my body is slim.

I am super picky and hate itchy items, too-tight things and anything that doesn’t look or feel expensive and wonderful.

$9 is $90 is $900.

The price makes no difference to me.

This dress, in an XL was SWIMMING on me.

Even the side I could see the armholes were huge and gaping and the bra was showing on the side. I just wore a side bandeau I happen to own in burgundy (in that exact shade of all things), and it looks very natural. Not at all strange.

Anyway, this is what it looks like on me, and after it has been altered.

Remember I am normally an S and this is an XL. You can kind of see it being a bit loose around the torso, but the length is now below my knees and honestly, it just feels loose and comfortable.

The back is also smooth and nice.

I wish I remembered to lift my arm. You would see that I wore a burgundy bandeau underneath that covered the side of my bra strap that shows just slightly because this is an XL and I am a size S.

LOTS of room to take it in. See how much fabric I grabbed?

The front draping is so pretty and SO stylish.

You can kind of see the janky tailoring job I did near the middle to cover the triangle patch but it just makes it look a bit pleated unless you stare closely. I’d most likely always belt this dress anyway.

It should have been figure / form fitting but I don’t mind the XL fit.

The back again, looser…

I love the dress with the alterations!

I hope the cutout trend (and the cold shoulder trend) goes away soon. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve picked up something I liked only to find it had weird cutouts.

I had to make a decision in the store of what to do with it. It looks much better now. What a stupid peekaboo in the middle of the STOMACH of all places.
