Style Help: What to wear as a new mother that is comfortable, chic, and stylish

Disclaimer: I have never ever been a sweatpants sort of person. Even in school, I always wore at least, jeans.. and very rarely any hoodies or anything typically school-style.

So…. my own style aesthetic veers towards not being lounge-y.

That said, I understand that it is not an easy thing for new mothers to feel comfortable to run after or take care of toddlers unless clad in sweat-wear, so I thought I’d post a few of my own outfits that are (to me) very child-friendly outfits that are stylish.

EASY CLOTHING SWAPS YOU CAN MAKE TO UPGRADE YOUR OUTFIT

SWAP: THE SWEATER/HOODIE FOR A STRETCHY COTTON BLAZER

I get that a sweater or a hoodie is SUPER comfortable and easy to wear. I personally don’t own any hoodies because what I hate is how heavy the hood is that it drags back the hoodie and the front rides up to choke me in the front.

A cotton blazer is JUST as comfortable and as warm as a sweater or a hoodie, trust me, you just need the right blazer.

Here are some blazer shopping examples:

My favourite blazer brand that fits my inverted triangle shape are the Slim Cut fit blazers from Massimo Dutti (I buy one size up) in 100% cotton or wool.

Here are some blazer outfit examples:

You have to look out for these two major details:

  • 100% cotton or wool
  • Unlined (preferably, it stretches better although not always)

How to check for comfortable fit:

  1. Put it on
  2. Button it up
  3. Hug yourself and watch the shoulders. If they go up, it is too big. If it feels tight across the back, it is too small.
  4. You should feel very comfortable in it, instantly.

SWAP: THE SWEATPANTS/LEGGINGS FOR HIGHER-RISE SUPER COMFY DENIM JEANS

I know that sweatpants and leggings are comfortable.

I probably prefer leggings over sweatpants if I had to pick but I think leggings, even ponte leggings look terrible on people if there is no top long enough to cover your butts and fronts.

I have tried to love leggings as pants, I really have.

I have tried to love ponte leggings as pants, and to accept these items, but unless these leggings have a zipper & button in front, and pockets in the back to camouflage your bottom, it just looks sloppy, tacky and not at all attractive no matter how rockin’ your bod is.

(Sorry. I’m judging. I don’t care how trendy athleisure is these days.)

Anyway, my point is that if you have time to put on a pair of sweatpants or leggings then you have time to wear jeans. You just haven’t found the right type of jeans.

Here are some jean shopping examples:

My favourite, specific jeans are: AG Farrah High Rise & Citizens of Humanity Sculpt jeans. I SWEAR by these two specific styles. SWEAR. They’re pricey but you only need one pair.

Here are some jean outfit examples:

You have to look out for these major details:

  • 98% cotton and 2% spandex
  • A rise that fits your natural waist (see below on how to check)*
  • The right size (don’t go by the tag, who cares if you are a US 8 or a US 18 as long as you are comfortable?)
  • Fabric feel — soft like a muppet? Perfect.

*My natural waist is 2 inches above my belly button, and RIGHT under my ribcage. It is super high and exactly why I need high-rise pants to feel comfortable.

How to check for comfortable fit in jeans:

  1. Take off your top.
  2. Bend to the side, and where you see your side bend and a waist appear, that is your TRUE NATURAL WAIST
  3. If your waistband of your jeans does not come close to or fit your natural waist, you will constantly be yanking them up and a muffin top that is non-existent, will appear

SWAP: THE SNEAKERS FOR OTHER KINDS OF FLATS

I tried wearing and buying sneakers (Converse), and I just hate them. I think they look good on some people but I just hate how the feel on my feet and I can’t quite get that casual look right to feel good in them.

Anyway, an easy way to dress up ANY outfit is to ditch the sneakers for equally comfortable alternatives such as:

  • Loafers
  • Oxfords with a feminine twist
  • Ballet flats — not for everyone, but a nice option
  • Pointed ballet flats
  • Flat boots – ankle or knee-high

Here are some flats shopping examples:

You have to look out for these major details:

  • Keep it simple & plain; avoid details like tassles, sequins, designs, etc.
  • 100% leather, cotton or an equally comfortable, BREATHABLE material
  • Buy the shoe size that fits

How to check for comfortable fit in flats:

  1. Get your size.
  2. The shoe has to fit instantly
  3. Walk around in it and lap around the store
  4. Squat in them a few times to see if they slip off your feet when you do so

I’m also a no sweatpants kind of person, not because I’m fashionable, but because it’s just “not done” where I live. Plus, jeans are more confortable because they don’t ride too low, they stay in place and they have more stucture.
However, I just can’t deal with blazers. They don’t look warm enough to me. They might be, but I feel the chills just looking at them. In an open office where somebody always has to set the temperature too low, I’ll take a cardigan over a blazer any day, or better yet, a poncho or vest of some sort.

      Really?! 🙂

I wear wool blazers (the soft wool kind) and I find them just as warm as sweaters. It is strange, I had the same feeling as you did, but it turns out that wool in a blazer or in a sweater is the same thing for me.
