Minimalist and Cheap Kitchen Cleaners

All I really have in my arsenal for cleaning is the following:

  • Baking soda
  • White vinegar
  • Water
  • Soap
  • Lemon
  • Salt

I use the above for everything.

BAKING SODA

The baking soda is to scour stains off the stove top or to scrub something that needs more than just a scrubby sponge.

I use it to scrub off calcified water deposits in the shower with a little sponge and some vinegar, rinsing with water and finishing with vinegar again.

I also use it on pots and pans.

WHITE VINEGAR

A disinfectant and a good window cleaner that leaves zero streaks.

WATER

Rinsing agent. To be streak free, you need to use vinegar.

SOAP

I use this to wipe down counters, remove grease and generally clean most items.

LEMON

If you happen to have one around, half used and you don’t know what else to do with it, it is very good for cutting grease on a barbecue by sticking strong prongs into it and using it to scrub off the barbecue grill.

It also removes fishy smells if you’ve grilled fish.

You can also use a lemon half with a tiny bit of salt (or baking soda) and use it to scrub pots and pans for a more deluxe cleaning, to remove lingering smells.

I also hear lemon juice lightens blonde hair as well and as a result I suspect it might be a very light bleaching agent.

What are some of your natural tricks?
