Luxe Minimalism: Closet Inventory – Dresses (Part Two)

WHY A CLOSET INVENTORY

As part of my rehab from shopping mindlessly program (e.g. #LuxeMinimalism), I decided to also take stock of what I own, and go through each individual piece to talk about why I am keeping it, how often I’ve worn it, and what it costs.

That should keep me busy.

Busy enough to stop thinking about shopping, anyway.

TOTAL COUNT OF DRESSES I OWN: 24

SECOND TWELVE DRESSES (PART TWO)

Luxe-Minimalism_Save-Spend-Splurge_What-is-in-my-closet_Dresses_2

SLEEVE LENGTH

  • Short-Sleeve: 11
  • Long-Sleeve: 1

As with the first 12 dresses, short-sleeves rule the day. They’re so much easier to wear and accessorize…

WORK APPROPRIATE

There are more dresses here that are less work appropriate for various reasons, like that there is a corseted boning in my vintage Monet waterlilies dress that prevents me from being comfortable, or my 3 too-body-conscious dresses I bought for maternity wear from Aritzia… or they’re too dressy, like my Spanish-made “Japanese Paper” dress, as I like to call it that was a gift.

  • Work: 7
  • Non-Work: 5

I consider that I can wear any dress to work with a sweater over it to cover my shoulders if it is too revealing.

DRESSY OR CASUAL

In the category, more of the dresses are casual than dressy.

  • Casual: 9
  • Dressy: 3

Casual to me would either mean the fabric or the cut (body-conscious or a shorter skirt)…

THRIFTED, RETAIL OR GIFTED

Now for which dresses were secondhand, or gifted?

The dresses above marked with red hearts were thrifted or gifted.

  • Thrifted: 3
  • Gifted: 2
  • Retail: 7

More of the dresses here were thrifted or gifted than in the first batch.

COST OF THE SECOND TWELVE DRESSES: $1213

DETAILS ABOUT THE SECOND TWELVE DRESSES

DRESS THIRTEEN: J. CREW STRIPED BLOUSON DRESS ($143)

This dress is really versatile. It is light and summery but also able to transition as a striped skirt piece.

J. Crew tended to have problems with skirts not being long enough so I was pleased to find this one hit just above my knees (when you sit, it’s a problem).

I love the light airy feel and the neutral stripes let me belt it any way I want.

This APC one is long sleeved but has the same aesthetic, and this Aryn K one is shorter but would be the closest to my dress.

DRESS FOURTEEN: JASON WU FOR TARGET STRIPED DRESS – $35

I waited 4 hours in line to buy this dress. It was super cheap (hello, Jason Wu for Target), and it is the perfect a-line shape for my body.

It does run a LITTLE short when you sit or bend over it in, so I tend to not wear it to work and only out and about in the summer.

Did I also mention the gorgeous stripes on the bottom and how much I love that it has POCKETS!??!

WANT THE LOOK?

This Theory version is simpler without the stripes at the bottom, but I really like the look of this one better, even though it doesn’t match the stripes.

DRESS FIFTEEN: MEL EN STEL FLEMISH LINEN RUFFLED COBALT BLUE DRESS – $350

I rediscovered this dress last year. Surprising because I love it and I paid a good amount of money for it, but never reached for it because it felt so frilly and fancy.

NO MORE!

I am wearing all my fancy, frilly dresses because I want to and they’re pretty. I’ll wear it out to the park with Baby Bun now, or going out on an errand. It’s too pretty to sit and languish in my wardrobe, unworn.

I just need to tone it down with the belt or to wear flats instead of heels with it.

WANT THE LOOK?

OK so the ruffles are not down the front in this version, but it is still pretty, this one has flutter sleeves, and this one has ruffles down the side.

DRESS SIXTEEN: VINTAGE MONET WATERLILIES DRESS – $295 [THRIFTED]

This dress was a piece of haute couture, custom made to a client in Paris in the past (at least from the 50s or before), and it ended up at a high-end consignment shop called The Cat’s Meow in Toronto.

I saw it, it was on sale, and I said: I want to try it on!

The fabric was gorgeous, beautiful silk, and the craftsmanship of the boning inside… impeccable.

The only thing I did not love was it was strapless, so I took the spare fabric and made straps out of it so I could wear a bra comfortably.

Anyway, I tried it on, and it was a match made in heaven. I had it tailored to bring in the hips and the bust as I was a smaller size than the original owner, and to this day, I wear it fondly and think of that experience.

It is literally a one-of-a-kind dress. There exists no other in the world and that makes it truly special to me.

WANT THE LOOK?

This dress is a psychedelic version of my one-of-a-kind haute couture dress and the closest I found to mine.

DRESS SEVENTEEN: BIONIC BLUE SPECKLED DOTS WRAP DRESS – $150

This is a workhorse of a dress in the sense that it is a simple wrap, sleeveless that has a good smattering of colours all over it like an Impressionist painting that is light and airy. I can wear it doing.. WHATEVER. It is not fussy, no buttons, it is summery but also good for winter or the office with its longer hem.

WANT THE LOOK?

These are more polkadots than Impressionist dots, but I can’t help but swoon over this polkadotted version or this DvF Julian one.

DRESS EIGHTEEN: VINTAGE STRIPED BLUE AND WHITE SUNDRESS – $15 [THRIFTED]

I still can’t believe I thrifted this dress for only $15. Seriously.

it is a 100% cotton, vintage, striped blue and white sundress. No pockets (boo) but it came with a belt which I turned into straps because I couldn’t stand the cheap plastic white straps it came with, and I didn’t want to wear a strapless dress.

A little D-I-Y and it is perfect for the summer. A little too flirty for work though.

WANT THE LOOK?

This one is a DEAD RINGER for my dress although 33X the price, and while it is not exactly like mine, the black and white stripes on this one is just as pretty.

DRESS NINETEEN: ARITZIA UPTON DRESS IN BLUE – $60

I went out and bought no less than 3 dresses in pretty much the same style from Aritzia when I was pregnant with Baby Bun. I LIVED IN THESE DRESSES.

They are body-conscious and tight, but man, with the midi-length, the bump was well covered as well as my butt, I never felt uncomfortable wearing it, or bending over in it because I knew it wouldn’t reveal anything.

The only thing I will say is that as the bump got bigger and bigger, I had to layer the dresses twice over each other because the fabric would stretch so thin, you could see my underwear!

I still wear them today. They’re my go-to dresses to pick up Baby Bun, go out with him, run errands, play in the playground. Well worth the money.

WANT THE LOOK?

I found an almost perfect match with this Joe Fresh version that is even a midi length! And this one from Joe Fresh has a turtleneck on it, this one is the cocoon version with long sleeves.

I don’t have many.. or any at all. It’s a dress I wear with some flats and some sunglasses. That’s pretty much it.

DRESS TWENTY: ARITZIA UPTON DRESS IN BLACK – $60

See Dress Nineteen above for the deets.

DRESS TWENTY-ONE: SPANISH ‘JAPANESE PAPER’ DRESS – GIFT

My mother bought this for me and she has impeccable artistic taste. I LOVE this dress from the feel of the fabric (like Japanese washi paper) down to the flirtiness of it, and the circle skirt.

It can do no wrong but it is far too fancy for the office even dressed down. I keep it aside for special occasions although I may attempt to wear it to work but belted, with a slouchy sweater over it.

WANT THE LOOK?

This Theory one on sale is all grey without the pattern but it is almost spot on, shape-wise and I like this Hugo Boss one on sale in a light grey.

DRESS TWENTY-TWO: TRACY REESE GREY GRECIAN WRAP DRESS – $45

I snagged this dress the minute I saw it on Adina in this shot here and here.

She pulled it off so beautifully that I KNEW I HAD TO OWN IT.

And I do. I just need to rediscover it in the summer and wear it. She is completely right in saying that it clings a little to the belly area which is probably why I am more reluctant to reach for it, as it will show all the lumps and bumps…. but who cares right!?

WANT THE LOOK?

This one is pretty close from Maria Severyna and this one is pretty close, but way more formal and slinkier

INSTAGRAM SHOTS

I think it is telling that I rarely wear this dress. I find it hard to wear in the winter because it is such a light material, and I don’t want to wear a cardigan over it because it conceals the pretty draping around the neck and shoulder.

A photo posted by Sherry @ Save. Spend. Splurge. (@saverspender) on

It is more of a summer dress but then it is a little fussy for a summer dress. Y’know? Considering getting rid of this one.

DRESS TWENTY-THREE: ARITZIA LISERE DRESS – $60

See Dress Nineteen for details.

WANT THE LOOK?

This one is not a midi length, but the style is similar and it comes in burgundy.

Note: I AM NOT PREGNANT! This is just an old retrogram shot of me and my bump, hanging out in my favourite Aritzia dresses.

DRESS TWENTY-FOUR: JOSEF BLACK WOOL SHEATH DRESS – GIFT

I received this dress as a gift from my partner when we first started dating. It is a perfectly classic wool silk dress that serves that gap in my wardrobe. It looks good when I have it on, I even belt it on occasion and it is a nice classic piece.

WANT THE LOOK?

Dead ringer here, this ruched version here, and I sort of crave this caped version. Yes. A caped sheath.

Love the black dress, and the J Crew striped dress; and how you chose to wear them both. Was never a fan of your three maternity faves, but each to their own of course!!

I don’t tend to belt things a lot – I find myself fiddling with the belt a lot, am rather self conscious. It also seems to make me sweat more :s And then there’s weird bunching or folding. Something I totally overthink, and for that, i have idle belts!

The black dress I rarely wear, so I find it interesting that so many people are interested in it 🙂

My J. Crew striped one is a staple in the summer.

My maternity wear is just because it is SO COMFORTABLE. If/when you have a bump, you will start seeking out ways to be comfortable.
