In Life, Style, What I bought, What I read

January 2016: What I bought, watched and read

WHAT I WATCHED

Michel Roux on Escoffier

Anything food, haute cuisine or cooking related? I AM IN. This is a fabulous documentary.

Above is a clip of the brigade system Escoffier pioneered in the kitchen.

CBC Passionate Eye: The Secret World of Haute Couture

The Secret World of Haute Couture. – BBC Documentary from annemieke knowles on Vimeo.

FASCINATING. I also love watching, reading and devouring anything fashion, style or haute couture related.

Barely Famous: Season 1

I have good and bad taste in TV. Enough said.

It’s a mockumentary of reality TV shows. Think “Curb your Enthusiasm” but much girlier and for me, funnier.

Here’s a funny clip above to give you an idea of the humour. They’re so sarcastic, and self-deprecating!

You can watch the Pilot Episode for free here if you are from the U.S., otherwise you’ll have to Youtube it with terrible quality.

WHAT I READ

So much. I didn’t have time to list it all in December, but I am doing it in January instead.

The Art of Social Media

[ MARKETING / SOCIAL MEDIA ]

I read it on a whim. I picked up a few notes here and there but not much. The general message is:

Write good content, promote it hard, and they will come

Hmm. 🙂

Bling Ring

[ TRUE CRIME ]

This book was totally disjointed to read and I couldn’t follow the entire unfolding of events properly because it was like it jumped back and forth between one girl to another then back to the guy..

Anyway, it was still an interest true crime read of how some rich, bored high schoolers ripped off celebrities who don’t seem to set alarms or take any security precautions.

It is also a nice introspective & look into the celebrity-obsessed culture we seem to have cultivated in the past 10 – 20 years.

The Girl in the Spider’s Web

[ BUTT-KICKING FICTION ]

I LOVE THIS SERIES.

This book was gripping, I couldn’t put it down. I couldn’t leave it once I got sucked into the writing and I HAD TO KNOW HOW IT ENDED.

So good. I hope they write more with Lisbeth Salander, she’s by far one of my favourite heroines and lead characters, EVER.

Now…

I am HOOKED on the Detective Harry Bosch novels.

See, I pride myself on being pretty good at guessing who did it even before the end.

Of all the ones I’ve read so far, I can only guess who did it in about 30% of the books. One of them REALLY came out of left field for me, and it was just.. so brilliant to be tricked all the way until the end.

The Harry Bosch Novels: The Black Echo, The Black Ice, The Concrete Blonde

[ CRIME FICTION ]

Hooked. I was hooked by page 10. I read all of them and couldn’t stop reading.

The Harry Bosch Novels Volume 2: The Last Coyote, Trunk Music, Angels Flight

[ CRIME FICTION ]

LOVE his writing. I devoured these above books in 4 weeks while reading other stuff.

The Harry Bosch Novels Volume 8: Bone City

[ CRIME FICTION ]

I will be reading all the rest of the novels this month and next.

Japanese women don’t get old or fat

[ FOOD / DIET / JAPANESE CUISINE ]

I enjoyed this book just as a fun, light read.

I don’t diet and never plan on dieting and what the Japanese eat is pretty much what I eat as well. We’re light meat eaters and our portions are substantial but not gut-busting.

Branded Beauty: How Marketing Changed the Way We Look

[ MARKETING / BEAUTY / MAKEUP ]

An excellent book on the beauty and retail industry on how the industry works.

I highly recommend it. It was a good, light read with a little technical work in there.

I feel bad about my neck

[ HUMOUR / GETTING OLDER ]

This is a great book because it was so easy to read and funny. She’s fresh, sarcastic and would absolutely be my favourite aunt hands down.

Great, quick read about being a modern woman.

The Battle of Versailles: The Night American Fashion Stumbled into the Spotlight and Made History

[ FASHION / HISTORY ]

It was a long, drawn out read. I found it hard to follow, it wasn’t as good as let’s say the work of Teri Agins.

I loved reading about the history of fashion and how American designers made it to the forefront of the industry but man.. it was really rough to get through each, long, drawn out page.

Vogue on Christian Dior

[ FASHION / HISTORY ]

LOVE! I learned a lot about the history of Christian Dior which surprised me a little, and if you’re into fashion in general, you’d love this book.

Vogue on Ralph Lauren

[ FASHION / HISTORY ]

I have way more respect for Ralph Lauren than I ever had in the past.

Brilliant marketer of lifestyles, I think he was really the frontrunner in pushing lifestyle as a whole concept for retail rather than just selling clothes.

He also lives the world he crafts.

PAIN, WORK, PARTIES

[ BIOGRAPHY / POET / WRITER / NYC ]

I liked very much reading abut Sylvia Plath and all about the 50s and how women were perceived back then.

What a terrible time for women. Seriously. The dresses and glamour are just masking how sad and lonely they all felt inside to conform.

I’m even more grateful that I am in the era I am in. I could not have survived back then.

Brooklyn Street Style: The No-Rules Guide to Fashion

[ FASHION / STYLE / TIPS ]

I did a whole review of basic style points I learned here. Overall, excellent book to read, skim a little information from and to obtain inspiration.

Paris Street Style: A Guide to Effortless Chic

[ FASHION / STYLE / TIPS ]

This is my favourite out of the 3 style books (obviously). I like the classic overtones of Parisian style but with the eclectic twist of Brooklyn style.

Berlin Street Style: A Guide to Urban Chic

[ FASHION / STYLE / TIPS ]

My least favourite of the 3 because it just made Berlin street style seem so boring. Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t, I could have used more outfit ideas.

Still enjoyed reading it. And now I want a military parka.

Paris Street Style: Shoes

[ FASHION / STYLE / TIPS ]

My second least favourite of the 3 Paris style books I read. It was just so… blah. Still, a decent fluff book to while away the time.

Parisian Chic by Ines Fressange

[ FASHION / STYLE / TIPS ]

This was my least favourite. It was boring even though I like Ines Fressange (fashion muse!) because I am more into street style & photographs of people’s actual outfits.

The illustrations were cute but did nothing for me.

I also pretty much knew everything she wrote in the book already, but did come up with the inspiration to find the perfect cashmere navy sweater with a v-neck to pair with some white pants.

Kind of like this:

My super casual #ootd hanging around the home is a @bananarepublic outfit in a cord pant and a cashmere sweater.. #style #stylegram #styleblogger

This sweater from @bananarepublic looked good online but was thin and itchy as heck. #nothanks #shopaholic #ootd … Colour is nice though.

WHAT I BOUGHT

SKINFIX HAND CREAMS – $20 EACH

These Skinfix hand creams are incredible.

I have eczema prone skin and this is cured up my dry skin, stopped itching and softened my skin unbelievably.

I will definitely be buying them again. Holy Grail. FOUND! And fairly natural to boot.

Otherwise, it’s always full of perfumes and other ingredients I am not sure about.

[RETURNED] MANOLO BLAHNIK METALLIC SPECKLED 90MM BB PUMPS – $700

manolo-blahnik-lavender-bb-metallic-speck-leather-pumps-lavender

And these Manolo Blahniks are $700…. ON SALE.

Manolos are the most comfortable heels on the market, hands down for me.

I can walk in 4″ in them after a bit of practice, and I need at least 3.5″ to be comfortable (any shorter and it’s odd, but my sole / foot doesn’t seem to feel comfortable at that kind of odd angle or arch)

So I returned them because… well.

$700.

And I could use that money back in my budget seeing as I am unemployed right now.

INDEPENDENT REIGN SILVER LINEN TOTE – $100

independent-reign-metallic-linen-silver-tote-2

I wanted it in this post, remember?

Come to think of it.. I pretty much bought everything in that post that I wanted except the scissors, the hip bag and a pair of the M. Gemi flats. I should rename those posts to: “What I Will Buy” not.. “What I Want To Buy”…

Anyway….

BURBERRY – $10,000
……. BUT IT ALL GOT RETURNED. DON’T WORRY.

My ode to what happened:

Burberry had a sale.

Burberry costs more than a whale.

When I clicked on the email….

…. it was all over.

I ordered a few items with the FULL INTENTION OF RETURNING THEM.

Free shipping + Free returns = Credit-card-swiping-happiness because you know you can return it

The other items?.. Well.. c’mon now, a SILK trench coat? OMG.

Perfect green field jacket with nubuck sleeves? OMG x 2.

*cough*

Let’s start!

*pets her broken and battered credit card that blew up after this $10,000+ order*

BURBERRY BOOK COVER PRINT COTTON TRENCH COATS IN DRAGONFLY BLUE – $2297

This was definitely one I was not going to keep. It is very nice but it is too expensive for what it is — a kind of trendy, wild, graphic piece.

If it were $800 or less, it would have been more tempting but not at this price range.

So this one was the dark blue version..

It is really @burberry #gorgeous !! #ootd #styleblogger #fashionblogger

It seems to fit well but the US 4 for my inverted triangle shape means I need a US 6 .. #ootd #fashionista #style

BURBERRY BOOK COVER PRINT COTTON TRENCH COATS IN BRIGHT SKY BLUE – $2297

Ditto. See above. This one was the light blue version. I liked the writing at the bottom.

BURBERRY SILK SKIRTED TRENCH COAT IN PARCHMENT – $1886

This silk trench.. I had a feeling this trench would not be going back once I had it on my body.

It is perfection.

I mean just look at the back! SKIRTED.

The detail in the @Burberry coat is incredible though. Too bad.. #shopping #shopaholic #style #ootd

BURBERRY FIELD JACKET WITH NUBUCK SLEEVES – $1295

burberry-nubuck-sleeve-cotton-linen-field-jacket-2015-2

The field jacket is beautiful, the sleeves are nubuck though so it means it can’t go out in the rain *womp womp*… but it looks incredible.

Too bad when I got it, it was way too big and did not look as good on me as on the model. Plus I couldn’t cinch the inside of the parka, it had little leather cinchers but they did not hold its shape, it would just shift and move out.

Shapeless field jacket right? @Burberry if it helps it was well made but the buttons were finicky #ootd #style

A photo posted by Sherry @ Save. Spend. Splurge. (@saverspender) on

It’s a shame this @Burberry field jacket was so big on me.. It also was pretty shapeless. #shopping #shopaholic #styleblogger

In case you’re wondering, I returned it all.

The book trenches didn’t fit well plus I hated the collars which are a patent leather (looks cheap and plasticky), the silk trench was BEAUTIFUL too delicate and beautiful to wear anywhere practical for the price tag, and the field jacket was a disaster in its sizing.

*sigh*

Your rhyme about the Burberry sale cracked me up. Oh man that trench is so gorgeous and looks so great on you, but I totally get why you returned it.

I gotta say, the skirted trench is gorgeous. Had I been able to afford it, I don’t think I could have returned it. So you have some impressive willpower!

How many ounces are the lotion bottles? My husband has severe eczema all over his body. He itches no matter what, but keeping up on lotion does make things a little easier.

They’re low around 2.5-3oz One bottle lasts me about a month because I use it liberally all over my body .. If he has eczema that is not cured then this may not help. Cure it first with Clobetasol or something and then try to keep it at bay with heavy lotioning

They put PATENT leather on those book cover trenches? At $2000+ a pop? I’m kind of disturbed Burberry would make a misstep like that. I hope that’s not a sign of things to come from them 🙁

I’m intrigued by the Branded Beauty book. I’m itching for a new book, and I think I’m going to have to check that one out next.

PATENT LEATHER. Hideous and cheap looking. Branded beauty was excellent but as of late my brain wants easy reads like crime fiction

Hahahaha I’m also searching for a navy V-neck sweater after reading Ines Fressange book because I live in white jeans in the summer!

I already own a navy sweater but t is a thick oversized cable knit. I’m pondering just making that work.

I’m thinking about nice, lightweight probably cotton for me – I live in mild Mediterranean climate and have 2 kids around much of the time so nothing to warm and nothing to fancy either.

Oh yeah, you definitely want something lighter. How about just a 100% cotton navy long-sleeved top? I like the ones from The Gap.

Something like that – yes :-)!
I’ll find something similar – we don’t have GAP here but great Mango online shop which delivers to Croatia too. We have Benetton which is quite popular here and has this basic good quality items.

We have Mango as well but the returns process is terrible.
