Is there anything political about the way you dress?
Maybe.
I dress to be who I want to be seen as, even though I’m in a STEM profession and should probably try and dress more like the way people think I should look.
Instead, I am in makeup, high heels, ankle pants, wrap dresses, bright colours, and happy to do so.
I am a feminine STEM’er, and for years I thought that was just NOT DONE for smart girls and brainiac women (see: dressing like a sexless jellyfish), but I’ve since realized that you can do what you want and break stereotypes.
If people want to think of me as a brainless ornament (yes, these are exact words used by a new office mate behind my back), so be it.
I know I’m not, and that’s all that matters.
Once they get to know me & I have a chance to prove my brain, they’ll see that I’m not either.

I have heard and seen it all. It sort of doesn’t faze me.
I luckily don’t wear suits to work either, so I breathe a sigh of cool, contented relief.

I remember dressing very differently when I was younger. You'd be surprised.

I normally dress very nerdy – jeans and tShirts and comfy shoes, but that’s because I want to be as comfortable as possible, not because I feel the need to conform to some “geeky” uniform. That being said, during summer I prefer dresses, mostly because of the temperature. Nobody in my office bats an eyelash, since they’re also in (longer)shorts and open toe sandals. We’re lucky that we don’t have client interactions or a dress code, because at 35-40 degrees Celsius, most formal wear would be considered a form of torture.
