ONE.
How great thinkers organized their time.
I feel like in the past, they had a lot more time to do nothing but talk, stroll, have a dinner, read… relax.
We seem to be a society always on the go now, and ironically we in the past had assumed machines and automatons would help us have MORE time to relax not that we’d have to ramp up and be even MORE productive with the aid of machines.
*shakes head*
Who here can really say they have time to read for a few hours a day with a full-time job and a family?
Flaubert’s made me go “aww”.. he put time in there to talk to his mother, and I particularly enjoy the dark green section labeled: REAL WORK.

TWO.
The WORST fashion fad in this list (for me) is foot binding. I shudder every time I read how they bound women’s feet in China.
It’s right up there with female circumcision.
Speaking of fashion, I really liked this article about power dressing. As a woman in a male-dominated industry, when I show up in a dress, I get surprised looks.
Once I wore a white sheath to work with some heels and the director, upon meeting me for the first time (thought I was a man by my name), came by to say hello to everyone and did a visible double-take when he reached me because I happened to be in a dress (the only woman out of all the women, wearing a dress).
Flattering, but also a reminder that I am not in an industry that has a lot of women to begin with, so dressing like a woman can make me stand out.
Still, I do not want to wear a suit to work, I hate wearing pantyhose and wearing a wrap dress is when I am at my most comfortable.

FIVE.
Vegans are not going to like this, but I fully support it in the name of science and health.
Speaking of vegans, did you know that the Germans have 10 awesome words that perfectly describe situations in life?
Such as this gem: Kummerspeck also translated as “grief bacon”.
No seriously.
GRIEF BACON.
It means to gain weight from excessive emotional overeating.
SIX.
Can you REALLY tell how smart a person is by the way they look?
Seems like the elfin look = smartness whereas rounded chins and broader faces = stupidity.
It also sucks to read about how some people expect others in the service industry to look a certain way.
SEVEN.
Not only are they smokin’ hot but man can they play AC/DC’s Thunderstruck on cellos and give a hell of a performance!
Smooth Criminal is also pretty damn impressive:
EIGHT.
Even killer animals like lions have hearts but apparently human males playing video games, less so.
NINE.
I’m ashamed that Torontonians are a bunch of cheapskates. Maybe what they need is a serious course in personal finance and literacy.

@save. spend. splurge.: Oh yes, after an initial tuning of the ear; funnily enough, it’s the inserted American drawled words I have more trouble with, they really don’t suit the Pfalz dialect – having said that, my dad grew up with that dialect and they had US army bases nearby so theoretically, Pennsylvania Dutch could have been re-invented in the 1950s LOL!!
I find it strange that although the Amish learn high German in order to read the bible, they don’t speak it… I’m not sure how well they understand spoken “normal” German now that there is so much English mixed into Pennsylvania Dutch (they Germanise English verbs at times, but I’m used to that to some extent from Swiss-German!). Whenever I read PD, I can “hear” my great-aunt talking… 😉-

This is fascinating. Truly!! I am always interested in the subtle nuances in languages and what people can understand. A Spanish guy told me once he picked up Italian pretty quickly because it sounded so similar to Spanish, and Portuguese was a breeze too.

I like ONE on how they divide their time. They don’t seem to work more than 3-6 hours a day. But, on the other hand, these hours are really focused. There also is a lot of time for socializing. Before telephones and internet, you could only interact with people by either visiting them in person or writing a letter. Information could only be gotten through newspapers, other peoples, libraries, etc. These are all constraints that will structure people’s days. I think that today with machines and the internet, we’ve lost a lot of those constraints. So, we need to learn how to set rules for ourselves, such as no work emails after 6pm in France, or not doing work on the weekends.

I agree completely. Our work and personal lives have blurred to the point where there’s no distinction, and as a result, we are always on call.

I’m pretty sure we’ve become more productive since computers were invented but, yes, you’re right, we work more and are paid basically the same for it. Weren’t we supposed to be able to have more free time to ourselves? At least in America, the only free time I may have is on the weekend. And that’s because I’m a lower level employee… my boss and her boss have to always be on call. Ugh.
Hahaha tell this round-faced person I’m not smart! 😉

I’ve seen rock music done on harps, too. These concepts are so cool, mixing it up!
Doing reading on the Amish lately, pretty fascinating. I love their “Dutch”, actually a sloppy version of the German dialect my relatives speak, weirdly mixed with American English…!! Though I hear there is a Swiss version, too, which I haven’t yet heard.
