Bye bye, Smartphone

I’m going to cancel my smartphone because I’ve been casually monitoring my usage over the past few months, and I feel as though it isn’t really worth it.

I barely use it to make calls, and I can always just use a laptop to check my emails, and I won’t be going back to the U.S.

I was told it would be $300 to get out of this contract, but that hasn’t detered me.

I am cutting my losses and seeing it like this:

$300 to get out of this wireless contract, or pay $2400 over the next 2 years to avoid that charge?

I don’t even really need or use a cellphone. If I end up getting another one, I’m going super cheap. I don’t need a smartphone.

Decisions….decisions. 😛

Bye bye smartphone!

It was really nice having it to check my bazillion email addresses at once, find addresses and Google things to prove people wrong, but I’ll just have to be more organized and write/print Google Map directions instead.

I have simple To Do lists in the Awesome Notes app, as well as my Appointments and other Tasks.

For project management, you might want to check into the To Do app. BF uses it (he’s way more complex/organized), and it lets you set up project management-style tasks in categories with deadlines etc.

I have the app, but I found it a bit too complex/robust for me. He uses it constantly however.

I don’t sync with Outlook or with Mail. BF says the ONLY way to get anything on an i-Anything to sync to Mail (he hasn’t tried with Outlook), is to use NOTES. That yellow notepad looking icon.

He says it’s a bit of a mess however. It isn’t sophisticated and it gave him a headache when he tried to make several changes on his iPad and then sync back to Mail to store the notes.

There is also no way to store your To Do information or to see it on your computer — there is no desktop app for it.

If your BB works for you, don’t switch it unless you absolutely must.

Have you thought about EverNote? I hear a lot of people talking about it. I personally avoid it because it requires the internet and I don’t have it on my iPod Touch, but it’s a cloud-organizing sort of notebook that can go across multiple devices via wifi.

I must admit… Now that I’ve had a smartphone, I don’t think I can go back. Mostly due to the apps. I use Awesome Notes for EVERYTHING in my life. BEST APP EVER. (And thanks to you to introducing it to me.)

I have a smart phone, but I don’t have a data plan. I figure there are enough free wifi places in the city (coffee shops, fast food places, hotels etc) that I just use their signal if I need internet access while not at home.

    I’m re-selling it.

When I first went to the US I didn’t know about all the cellphone carriers except for Verizon and AT&T.

I really wanted to try a smartphone, and at that time they didn’t have it with Virgin. Then a few months later they came out with it and I kicked myself……

Brave of you! My iphone contains my life, pretty much, but then I don’t have an iPod Touch…! As long as it is my tool and doesn’t rule my life, I’m fine with my phone. For some reason, many people seem to struggle with that!

I used my iPhone like crazy, but ever since I switched back to the iPod Touch, the only thing I’m missing is the internet connection in the end.
      So I just use wifi then… 🙂

I’ve been contemplating that as well, though I do use plenty of minutes and texts. I just use very little data each month. Having a cell phone is worth closer to $50/month to me than the $80/month that it actually costs me. But getting out of the contract a few months early doesn’t do much for me since I still want *some* cell phone than can do Wi-Fi. I’ll figure something out eventually. I might give Republic Wireless or Ting a try when I do finally leave Sprint.
