Ask Sherry: What image editing program do I use?

You asked, and I am answering every Friday once I have enough questions!

You can ask any question using the form here.

Is there any image editing application that you use to edit your photos (personal or for the blog), like cropping or the like? Thank you.

I use Photoshop (not the newest one, Photoshop 5 from eons ago). I know Lightroom is also a cheaper alternative to Photoshop but I have never used it.

On the Mac, there’s a program called Pixelmator you could try as well. I found it to be quite good for basic image editing.

Still have a burning question?

I use an older version of Lightroom that is sufficient. The newer version is subscription only, which for my amateur purposes is a waste of cash. The Apple Photos software that comes with every mac actually has improved enough over the years that it’s probably competent for most people’s needs.

For more in depth image manipulation, GIMP is an excellent photo editor that’s completely free. It has a bit of a learning curve, but it’s served me well.

I haven’t even looked at Apple Photos, and as I work on a Mac, I bought Pixelmator as an option just in case my Photoshop no longer works on my newer Mac versions.

GIMP — yes that was the other PSP option that was mentioned for Windows. Thanks for the options!
