In Life, Style, What I bought, What I read

2016 Year in Review: What I bought – The Tops & Sweaters Edition

THE COUNT: 22 TOPS AND SWEATERS

Hoo boy.. And average of almost two tops added a month?!?!? I blame sales and thrifting for this.

I added 22 tops in total but that isn’t including the ones I purged even before the year was up because they were thrifted and I just felt like they didn’t work any more.

I replaced a few of items in my wardrobe with some of these items (tanks, button up shirts), and found a few more neutrals to add to my wardrobe, and some incredible prints.

A good chunk were thrifted/secondhand so I don’t feel so terrible.

THE OVERVIEW OF TOPS & SWEATERS

LE PETIT PRINCE TANK TOP

https://www.outofprintclothing.com/collections/womens-tees/products/little-prince-womens-tee

Sold out, but it comes in a t-shirt now and a sweatshirt. I love the print of this book more than the others because it covers the whole shirt too!

How could I not buy this? A classic book on a tank top that is graphic without being too twee or dated? Amirite?!?!?!?

Love this tank. You may have seen it worn quite a lot on Instagram and that’s because it is awesome under a blazer with jeans.

OLIVIA PALERMO PINSTRIPED COTTON BUSTIER

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=536336008&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

Dead ringer for exact here, similar here and here. There is something very sweet but business-like about a cotton pinstriped bustier. It’s like they’ve read my mind, although there is sometimes a weird puckering under the bust if you don’t fill it out like I do.

I saw this and fell in love. It breaks my rules of no spaghetti straps because it highlights my broad shoulders in a bad way, but the belted waist helps balance that out. I also tend to wear it with a topper to hide my shoulders…

Anyway, I love it. It is so feminine but not too lacy or sexy, even being a “bustier”. I also love the shirt collar feel the front bust detail has. It is so cute!

My only qualm is it is a bit short. I’d have liked it about 3 inches longer because when you belt it, it eats up some of the fabric and it rides up.

I wore it quite a few times, mostly under a blazer, and love it to death!

EQUIPMENT BLACK SIGNATURE SILK BUTTON UP SHIRT

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=431712097&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

Exact here. Their silk shirts are super, duper soft and luxurious, but an amazing company that does a very close dupe is Grana. My review of Grana silk and cashmere is here, and my Grana referral link for 10% off your first order is here.

Thrifted, naturally, for about $90 CAD.

I love finding XS shirts in Equipment because the silk is gorgeous and this looks more like a charcoal grey than black due to its silk nature. Like a washed black.

Very pretty and comfortable, good even as a topper.

I can’t seem to find any photos of me wearing it, but I know I wore it at least twice as a topper…

CYNTHIA ROWLEY WHITE TANK TOP

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=520562647&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

Similar here. Honestly, it’s just a plain white jersey tank. You’ll find it anywhere.

I bought this as a layering tank, like a base one but in jersey not 100% cotton. It was in Winners for $20. I wear it backwards so that it covers my bra in front.

It’s just a white tank, nothing special.

2 X THE GAP V NECK LONG SLEEVED TOPS

Similar here, and they’re just some basic cotton v-neck shirts, so nothing special.

Just some basic v neck tops, scored on sale for $10 each I think. Simple tops to wear under toppers, really.

Nothing special.

XOOS WHITE BUTTON UP SHIRT

http://www.chemise-homme.com/recherche-par-attribut-chemise-homme-ceinture-cravate-coloris-blanc-66-228.html

Exacts here, and they have details like elbow patches and lining or cuff prints (which I don’t really like for my style), but their fit is phenom. Take your true size, I am a US 6 in the shoulders and the 36 fits perfectly.

Finally, a white button up shirt in a crisp cotton that is nipped in and not too short!!!!

They’re a French brand, XOOS but they’re made in Turkey. It is opaque and a very nice crisp cotton unlike the other versions I have constantly hunted for and tried in the past.

I stalk their site for a striped version, or anything classic. This is a work shirt, so I haven’t worn it yet.

JAMES PERSE WHITE LINEN BUTTON UP SHIRT

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=536363160&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

Similar here, and I find James Perse linen and cotton is extremely luxurious but I can’t justify the super high price tag at retail without a discount at least. Still, it’s like pyjamas!

Another thrifted piece that replaced a linen shirt I had in my wardrobe. In the end, with linen you need to buy high end because linen is super soft, like the softest whisper of cashmere if you buy the good stuff.

The bad linen, which is found at mainstream retailers like Banana Republic, is slightly stiff and scratchy. It still does the job but doesn’t feel like a soft hug.

This shirt also has ribbed sides which give me a lot more stretch and freedom otherwise not found in a button up shirt. Rick Owens does this with his leather jackets too, and that’s why they aren’t stiff and are super comfy.

2 X LINEN TANK TOPS

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=536317773&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

Similar here, and they’re basic linen tanks for summer.

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=511887009&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

Similar here, and I find I wore the light grey one a lot more because my toppers were so dark.

Just your basic thrifted linen tanks found for $5 each. They’re great for summer at the park or just as a casual top.

They’re loose and a nice neutral.

CARVEN SILK MAP PRINT GATHERED TOP

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=610916758&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

An interesting take on a map print here, but this Carven print is just so arresting. It’s GORGEOUS. I stare at it when I wear it, which probably makes me look like a weirdo, but it is really stunning. Well worth stalking.

I have stalked this print since I saw it on Wendy in 2012. That’s a long time!!! I finally found it and was the only one to bid on it because it was just so WEIRD.

It was badly photographed and had a sleeve on one side but was a tank with a pleat underneath the bust on the other.

Terrible. Must have been an avant-garde style for Japan (where it came from), but I saw the potential I just chopping the errant sleeve off and making it a blouse with an interesting pleat instead.

Very glad I did so, it is gorgeous. Truly a stunning print. I’d love to find a skirt or dress in this print, and I’ll basically collect this print now.

BANANA REPUBLIC GREEN METALLIC GOLD LINEN T SHIRT

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=542376360&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

Similar here, and I find that linen is nice and light for summer, but it can get boring with just plain linen (like my 2 basic tanks above), so a metallic that isn’t too shiny is always a welcome added touch which you can wear during winter too. I found BR linen to be quite fitted in the arms so you might want to size up, but it’s stretchy and comfortable.

I saw this for $20 and thought it couldn’t go that wrong. Slightly itchy for lower quality linen but also that it is a metallic linen so it adds a little to the stiff/scratchy feel. It was soft enough to wear so I bought it anyway and it has lent a nice golden touch to my outfits.

JAMES PERSE GREEN V NECK T SHIRT

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=516954995&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

Similar here. James Perse is SO amazing for t-shirts, and their cuts with the V are very flattering. I should have bought more but the other colours were so dull and not at all vibrant (not my style).

This was a steal for so cheap and I took it in a super soft khaki green so that it would be another nice neutral. I don’t regret it but it is a bit low cut for me so I need to be aware of it when I bend over to help Baby Bun.

HUGO BOSS IVORY CASHMERE AND WOOL COWL NECK SHELL

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=531994352&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

Similar here and here and this one is way pricey but my goodness a stunner. I love a good cashmere shell, and this one with a cowl neck is normally not my thing because I hate things around my neck, but it is low enough to not choke me.

$5!! Thrifted of course. Can you believe it? A Hugo Boss classic ivory cowl neck shell in cashmere and wool for $5!!!!!

It just sat there and I was pleased to snag it. No flaws at all, just someone who got bored of their hundreds of dollars top.

BANANA REPUBLIC ORANGE & CREAM STRIPED SILK SHELL

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=522863528&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

A cool take on a striped orange top here, although the one I have I am even more decided on chopping off the sleeves to make it a tank now, way more versatile.

Another thrifted piece. I wasn’t sure about it but for $5 I took a gamble on the print. I feel like it would be cuter as a tank so I may remove the sleeves.

I rather like the circus feel of it with the orange and ivory stripes and have been mostly pairing it with navy blue. I need to figure out another colour combo with this.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BMFI8kbB7rA/?taken-by=saverspender

MICHAEL KORS STRIPED BOW BLOUSE

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=534632339&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

Exact here, and I really like the tie in front, but at the back is best so I can wear necklaces to show it off.

On for 50% off and around $100, it is a really nice, well made striped button up shirt with a tie in front. Unfortunately the tie can’t be removed but I tie it low on my chest in front, or just flip it to the back for another look (the tails of the bow flowing off my back as I walk).

I really like it.

J. CREW FACTORY WHITE V NECK COTTON LONG SLEEVED TOP

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=506621985&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

Exact here. It’s just a plain cotton top. You can find dozens of them anywhere.

Another $5 score in the thrift shop. A simple plain white cotton top that is oversized in a medium and rather different, adding a nice white touch to my outfits that are otherwise quite dark as of late.

Just your basic white sweater, I’ve worn it a few times but didn’t record my wears…

ACNE STUDIOS PACISPUNCH CHARCOAL GREY CREWNECK SWEATER

http://www.mohawkgeneralstore.com/products/punch-sweater-charcoal-grey

Exact here. I hate the name of this sweater, I really do, but the detailing and the fit, the softness is incredible. I find Acne Studios pricey, and only worth it on sale, and I have NEVER FOUND THEM IN A THRIFT STORE. GAH.

My newest Boxing Week acquisition, for 50% off it was still $230 but so incredibly soft, well made and with the prettiest and most subtle touch of brushed felt in a tonal charcoal grey at the neck, waist and wrists.

It is a classic otherwise “boring” sweater with a little twist which is what I like. I took the small but the medium while it fit loose didn’t look as good as it being fitted, even with my recent penchant for oversized items.

I JUST bought this, haven’t had time to wear it yet!

CLUB MONACO MACKENZIE STRIPED WOOL SWEATER

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=539083283&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

Exact here, and it is seriously the last stripe shirt I should ever add to my wardrobe. Right? RIGHT?

So soft!!! I can’t resist a stripe and it was on a deep discount for $47. It is super soft, a crew neck and slightly sheer but feels very soft and wonderful. I also didn’t have an ivory and navy stripe in a long sleeved wool, so there you are.

I JUST bought this, haven’t had time to wear it yet!

EBERJEY GISELE PYJAMA SLEEP SHIRT

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=475475545&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

Exact here, and I am hankering after more of these things, I love the way they look and FEEEEEEL…. They’re also light enough for summer.

This is not a shirt to go out in but it was 50% off and merited a mention here because it is SO INCREDIBLY SOFT.

Like wearing a cloud.

I took the only one left in a Medium (it is huge on me, I need an XS, it’s oversized) but I would have bought the stock of all the sizes at that price. It is just for lounging and sleeping at home so who cares how loose it is?

So good. I hope to find more EberJey pyjamas on sale. It is also a sleep shirt so you can go pant less.

I am wearing it now, but it looks just like on the model.

MODCLOTH OUT OF PRINT TRAVEL MORE WORK LESS SHIRT

http://www.modcloth.com/shop/graphic-tees/time-to-prioritize-tee-in-ivory

Exact here, super similar version here just in charcoal grey with text. I’m in love with a good graphic.

Got this because the quote says it all.

Unfortunately I zipped my jeans into the shirt and now there is a hole, so it is unacceptable to wear out. It has become a nice home lounge shirt. It is in a good high quality cotton, super soft and very inspiring. I really like it.

RALPH LAUREN PAINT SPLATTERED SWEATSHIRT

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=539278087&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

Paint splattered blazer here, and this t-shirt is neat and even comes as a dress, which is very pretty. I almost feel like someone smarter than me could DIY this.

Saw this for sale at Marshalls and I wasn’t sure what to think of it. Ultimately I bought it and love it, it is very fleecy and warm inside, and the paint splatter is just too cool… It adds colour with any colour required at all.

It is really nice and I dress it up to downplay the casual nature of it.

STATISTICS

Thrifted: 8

Retailed: 14 (of the ones retailed, 8 of them were on sale)

MOST PROUD OF?

This time, no hesitation, I hunted down and scored the most amazing map printed top, from Carven. I basically want to collect this print in every way possible.

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=610916758&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

Am I giving anything away that I am stalking eBay for this print and if I find it I will (and have) bought it? 😉

FINAL THOUGHTS

I added a LOT of tops to my wardrobe. A good chunk of them were neutral basics, like my linen tanks or long-sleeved tops in neutral colours.

I also seemed to have a thing for khaki green this year, adding TWO shirts in that colour to my wardrobe.

Otherwise, the rest were just interesting pieces, and of course, my weakness is pinstriped or striped tops.

Will I add more tops in the next year? Probably. Will it be a map print and pinstripes again? Oh yes!

I will be retiring more items though as they wear out (my one tank top is starting to look very distressed, it calls out from the closet in tears because it is so ripped and frayed..)

Want to know what else I bought?

(So much.)

Stay tuned for the rest of my 2016 Year-end What I bought roundups. I am doing each category.

I love, love, love the map print and that you tailored it into a tank. I think the neckline is brilliant, and I don’t normally care for anything asymmetrical. I’ve tagged the library card stamp tee from OutOfPrint. I’d never heard of them, so thanks for sharing the source! Also, the navy blazer with the pocket emblem (can’t think of the right word for it) reminds me of the uniform blazer I had to wear at one of the high schools I attended. It looks super smart. Cannot believe the amazing thrifting deals you scored. *Eyes the cashmere cowl neck sweater*
