In Life, Style, What I bought, What I read

2016 Year in Review: What I bought – The Skirts Edition

THE COUNT: 19 SKIRTS

Egads! A little over one skirt added per month. In my defense, most were thrifted…. or on sale 🙂

THE OVERVIEW OF SKIRTS

GREEN AND BLUE MERMAID WOOL SKIRT

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=619194141&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

Similar here and here.

This was a gamble, a thrifted find for $5 and it was at least two sizes too large. I took a chance on it because I wasn’t sure how it would work out being tailored in so much.

The fabric is a wool but a really pretty shimmery tweed sort of style with interwoven green, blue and purple threads. It reminded me of a mermaid, frankly and it had DEEP POCKETS in front which I loved.

I thrifted it and had to get it altered so by the time I got it back it was too cold to wear it but I can still see myself wearing it on occasion casually with a tee.

It is still about half a size too large but I’m not too worried as then it means I get to eat and sit comfortably.

Anyway, haven’t worn it yet. Waiting for work.

RED WOOL SKIRT

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=532199511&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

Almost exact here and here.

Another gorgeous thrifted find with 100% wool as its fabric. You just can’t find this kind of quality in stores let alone for $5!!

Amazing. A nice deep red and I had it altered to fit my waist. It also has pockets! I guess only women in the past had to carry things in their pockets. /sarcasm

Anyway, haven’t worn it yet. Waiting for work.

BANANA REPUBLIC BRUSHSTROKE PURPLE WRAP SKIRT

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=604774466&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

Sort of similar here.

I saw this in store, and put it back. Then I saw it on Adina, found it on sale deeply discounted and bought it. That’s pretty much the story.

I could wear this anywhere really, and I love that wrap style in front, although the purple is a little too light for my liking.

Anyway, haven’t worn it yet. Waiting for work.

MAX MARA BRUSHSTROKE BLUE & YELLOW SKIRT

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=612884768&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

Brushstroke style skirt here.

I seem to have a thing for brush strokes as a pattern or at least a graphic one. I saw this in Winners and bought it only because of the print. The quality is not amazing for what it would have cost at retail because it is not lined. I would have preferred a thicker fabric as well.

Still, the print is great and I got it at the start of the year so I wasn’t quite in the throes of thrifting yet.

KATE SPADE AVALON SILK FLORAL SKIRT

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=497401497&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

Similar here..

Another find at Winners, the silk is a really stiff, almost fake feeling silk or at least what I think of as silk is probably the super soft velvety kind but there are lots of silk types out there. This one is a super pretty floral print with pockets, definitely for summer. I wore it to the park a lot and it was always very girly to me.

BANANA REPUBLIC WATERCOLOUR PRINTED SKIRT

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=519674941&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

Sort of similar here and here.

I think BR is turning a corner because this skirt was so pretty with its watercolour styled flowers and butterflies which I very much liked. I think I may have bought this one at full price with that token 20% off but I can’t recall. At any rate, it is a very pretty textured white skirt as well.

Anyway, haven’t worn it yet. Waiting for work.

3 X ARITZIA VEGAN SUEDE LIS PENCIL SKIRTS

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=503904724&pid=uid1104-32002848-44 https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=503904724&pid=uid1104-32002848-44 https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=503904724&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

Similar pencil skirt here.

Scored during Boxing Week for half off, I took the size 6 in these but then when I received them, they were a little large which I’m okay with. It is so strange, in store the 4 was tight like a sausage but when I took the 6, it was loose. I think I’m a US 5 now if that exists…

Anyway, the vegan suede feels incredible, very true to suede as much as possible and soft. An excellent substitute for the real thing.

The colours I took are major neutrals I’m missing in my wardrobe and surprisingly, I’m really loving this taupe colour, at least in a faux suede format.

Anyway, haven’t worn any of it yet. Waiting for work.

BLACK WRAP SKIRT

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=618799712&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

Similar here and here.

Another vintage thrift find for $7 I think? I tried it on because the wrap looked great and it had the prettiest bronze buttons. Such quality! It is soft and very well constructed with a demure but sexy drape.

BLACK LINEN WEST GERMANY SKIRT

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=609029801&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

Similar here and here.

Another thrifted find for $7, I knew it was too large but the quality of that linen was to die for. Super soft, felt almost like waxed cashmere and it is clearly an expensive piece. I just had it taken in a little at the waist.

Anyway, haven’t worn it yet. Waiting for summer.

CAMELHAIR SKIRT

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=603494310&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

Almost exact here.

One of my proudest finds at the thrift store for $7!! 100% super soft, luxurious camelhair is the way to go.

It would have cost in the thousands if it had a designer label slapped on it. I found it as a vintage piece, on the same day as the other skirts. Someone must have been cleaning out her closet.

Anyway, haven’t worn it yet. Waiting for work.

OATMEAL CASHMERE TWEED SKIRT

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=603726725&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

Sort of similar here.

Made in France and thrifted as another $7. It is a tweed style cashmere skirt in an oatmeal colour. Very pretty.

Anyway, haven’t worn it yet. Waiting for work.

COBALT BLUE SKIRT

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=542555600&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

Almost exact here and here.

Another vintage thrifted find for $7. A deep solid cobalt blue (my weakness!) in 100% wool and with POCKETS. You can’t beat that.

Anyway, haven’t worn it yet. Waiting for work.

MAGENTA PURPLE SKIRT

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=541767329&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

Similar here and here for plus-size.

Yet another vintage, thrifted $7 pocket-ful skirt. The colour is stunning in 100% wool and it is a really nice skirt that drapes well.

Anyway, haven’t worn it yet. Waiting for work.

CLUB MONACO DILYS HIGH-WAISTED KHAKI GREEN SKIRT

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=534648784&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

Exact here and it’s also in blue.

I hemmed and hawed over retailing this piece but ultimately I bought it at 20% off because I KNEW it would sell out. I was half right. It was on sale a few weeks later but my sizes were completely gone. I’m glad I bought it when I did!!!! It is a really nice army surplus green and the high waist is cute. I’m debating hemming it to the knee to be more flattering.

MASSIMO DUTTI WHITE LINEN WRAP SKIRT

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=521107072&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

Almost exact here and this one is cute with pockets.

I’m a sucker for white linen and this wrap skirt wasn’t even on my list until they brought it to try. I fell in love. Lined, opaque and very pretty in a soft linen, it is a nice look, with a tie and some dark accessories to toughen it up.

BLUE AND WHITE STRIPED SKIRT

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=516214615&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

Very similar here and here.

This was another retail piece and filled a wardrobe gap because I still do not have a pinstriped skirt until this one. It has pockets and a nice waist tie, a great summer skirt.

Sorry, the picture is really crappy but believe me, it is a nice skirt.

VINTAGE RALPH LAUREN WHITE COTTON SKIRT

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=502583505&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

Very similar here and here.

A $5 find. Some days, I fit into it, and other days I can’t even button it LOL!

I debated getting rid of it because it is so fitted in the waist, stating a size 10 label (!!!!!) vintage for sure, and it is a little long, but ultimately I find it really nice and the cotton quality is stunning, so thick and opaque. I think I shall keep it and maybe ask if they can insert some stretchy waist bands to give it a little stretch for the days when I need it.

I may also hem it.

STATISTICS

Thrifted: 10

Retailed: 9 (8 of them were on sale which is nice!)

MOST PROUD OF?

I have to say my thrifted camelhair skirt is my favourite find, as it is super soft and incredible quality.

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=603494310&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

For that quality, as it’s vintage, it was super cheap when thrifted, but would cost thousands in a big name label.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I love skirts. They’re incredible and really are a fantastic addition to a wardrobe for summer and for all kinds of seasons.

I also love finding thrifted vintage skirts WITH POCKETS and they keep turning up all over the dang place, but I don’t need any more, so I am only looking out for great prints right now.
