2016 Year in Review: What I bought – The Scarves Edition

THE COUNT: 15 SCARVES

My scarves tend to not cost a ton of money unless they’re designer-ish like Kenzo or something like that. Otherwise, I just really go for design, colour and touch. They have to feel comfortable, liquid and drape beautifully.

I’m also not a fan of tiny scarves, I need HUGE blanket scarves to hang down and wrap around, so if it’s small and square, I typically stay away because I can’t figure out how to wear it other than as a bandanna (which I do NOT do as a style rule).

THE OVERVIEW OF SCARVES

POLAR ARTIC MAP SCARF

https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/189607802/arctic-map-printed-square-silk-scarf?ref=hp_rv

Exact here.

So I thought it would look way more bright like in the photo above, but when I got it, it was way duller in its colouring, in fact, I think she sent me the purple one instead or something went wrong:

Anyway, I don’t hate it. I think it’s pretty, and it’s a nice green colour in general, and more khaki green which is nice.

I just don’t think I’ll order from this store again because I wasn’t given what was shown in the photo.

MONTREAL MAP SCARF

Exact here but you have to ask her for the custom listing for your city. Similar here and here.

This one at least from her, turned out well because it was in black and white only.

It came out exactly as shown above and I wore it here:

ORANGE MAP SCARF

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=492836734&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

Similar here and here but they’re more orange in total rather than an orange print on white.

Are we seeing a theme in the kind of scarves I like? 🙂 MAPS OBVIOUSLY. This one was picked up at Winners for $30 I think, all in cotton, with a nice teal edging, and the print is some random map of no place in particular.

KENZO WILD FLORAL SCARF

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=540731841&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

Closest I found from Kenzo is here, but more similar styles are here, here and here.

This scarf was rather pricey seeing as it was Kenzo as the label, but the print is just so PRETTY I couldn’t stop touching it and leave it.

I’m a sucker for very pretty, exotic floral scarves. What can I say?

PURPLE FLOWER SCARF

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=617184467&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

This is the most similar in style here, but this one isn’t bad either.

I thrifted this for $0.20 at the bargain bin of Final Clearance items, and it’s rather pretty. It feels like real silk (decent quality, habotai, not amazingly soft like luxury silk but not bad), and it’s a kind of old-style, retro scarf. It has added a little something to my outfits as of late.

ORANGE MOROCCAN PRINT SCARF

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=618981062&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

Similar styles of scarves are here and here.

This is definitely one of my favourites out of all the ones I purchased from Winners, the print is pretty but not cloying and it adds colour without it being too much. I’m glad I paid $30 for it, and it’s a bit thin, not super thick, but the silk is very soft.

PINK AND PURPLE CHALK STRIPED SCARF

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=604335670&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

Similar here and here but none are exact of course.

I don’t think I took any photos of myself wearing this scarf from Winners (again, super soft silk) yet, I didn’t get into that until later in the year, so I missed out on a lot of outfits.

I like the stripes, the mix of purple, pink and green to make it less sweet and still very pretty. Harkens back to my childhood love of pink + purple everything.

BLUE TILED SQUARE SCARF

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=517836426&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

Sort of not even close, but still blue tiled is here and here.

Thrifted for $0.20 I wasn’t sure about it at first, but it is 100% silk, just not very high quality, and the print reminds me of a pool liner, but there’s something still pretty about it.

Have yet to wear it, I just got it!

LEONARDI NAUTICAL STRIPED SCARF

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=607819478&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

Very similar here, and here in the same nautical theme.

It is polyester, thrifted for $0.20 though, which totally put me off, but it’s a vintage scarf from a brand called Leonardi. I like the stripes so much I couldn’t really say no, even though it’s not a natural fabric, and while I feel it is a bit plastick-y in its drape, it is still a nice scarf and adds a lot to an outfit.

I wore it very recently but haven’t taken a photo yet!

YELLOW FLEUR DE LIS SCARF

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=543947039&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

Sort of similar here.

Thrifted for another $0.20 again, I think this is the most high end scarf I may own in my wardrobe. The silk is Equipment quality, super thick, soft, and very very beautiful. I can tell someone paid a lot of money for this scarf at one point, but it’s unmarked and without a brand (all tags cut off). I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a designer brand.

The print is of little black fleur de lis all over, and it is really well made and extremely velvety soft.

WHITE AND GREY MICRODOT STRIPED SCARF

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=480224081&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

Kind of similar here and this one is almost exactly the same here.

It’s viscose, and from Winners for about $30. I’m a sucker for stripes, that’s all I can say.

I’ve worn it a few times but forgot to take pictures I think.

ANTHROPOLOGIE TAISIE TEAL AND GOLD FOIL CIRCLE SCARF WITH TASSELS

https://www.anthropologie.com/shop/taisie-infinity-scarf

One of my favourites, with its pretty teal and gold foil embossed print. I have to say the tassels threw me off as being too girly but they’ve grown on me. It’s a circle scarf, viscose, very comfortable and pretty with khaki green, probably the reason why I bought it to begin with.

I paid full retail price for this *gasp* but I don’t regret it! It later went on sale on the U.S. site for $30 but I didn’t bother checking, because the cost to ship it to me, with duties & so on (they don’t do it from Canada), ends up being the same price in the end.

WHITE SUNBURST EMBROIDERED SCARF

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=612756134&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

Pretty white scarves here and here.

This is Baby Bun’s favourite scarf, hands down. He loves the embroidery in a sunburst and he kept touching it over and over again so I bought it for him. I also like it too, and the embroidery is like a sunburst, which is very pretty and neutral.

KATE SPADE FLAMINGO PINK SCARF

http://bit.ly/2iPxZdI

The flamingo print is sold out in the scarf, but shows up as a dress and a top still.

I’m a lover of Kate Spade scarves in general, I own so many of them, and this flamingo one is very nice.

I should have bought the other scarves I saw but they turned me off with the tassels, when I went back the next day, they were all gone 🙁

KATE SPADE PINK MANHATTAN NEW YORK NY SCARF

https://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=487025387&pid=uid1104-32002848-44

Exact here. Other really pretty ones on my list is this masquerade one and this ballet ticket one… OH AND THIS MAP ONE!.

I’m a fiend for Kate Spade scarves. Whimsical and fun, and they remind me of my time living in NYC as a carefree DINK (Dual Income No Kids), wandering around, eating macarons and shopping…

I own this exact scarf in yellow and in a grey/pink wool version too, and the designs are different; same map, but different icons and sketches.

STATISTICS

Thrifted: 4

Retailed: 11

MOST PROUD OF?

Oh goodness. I have to say, I am the most proud of finding this extremely high quality yellow fleur de lis scarf…
https://www.instagram.com/p/BOuruGkhpUZ/

… but this Moroccan orange scarf is another one of my super major favourites to wear.

Oh. And this Anthropologie Taisie one too 😉

FINAL THOUGHTS

I love scarves. I love soft, velvety, silky scarves. I also really love map prints and that will never stop. I’m thinking I need to start making my OWN scarves now, it would probably be cheaper… 🙂

I only add scarves that are interesting to my wardrobe so I don’t really plan for it, but I do think I’ll thrift a lot more often for them.

Want to know what else I bought?

(So much.)

Stay tuned for the rest of my 2016 Year-end What I bought roundups. I am doing each category.

Your purple flower scarf was recently listed on eBay for $17.50 (U.S.) It’s an Oscar de la Renta scarf. You got a great deal on it!

I seriously love your scarves, The yellow one looks awesome but it’s the Kate Spade with the map that I really covet :).

    Hi Sherry,

I love the sunburst scarf, where did you get it from? What brand is it?

I love the neutral embroidery. It’s so unusual!

Loving the year-end series. Have you considered doing a review /update post on your current financial investments? I’ve read through your investing-how-to series and even opened a questrade account using your referral code last year but never bit the bullet and bought anything. My resolution for this month however is to finally purchase some investments, I’m looking at investing in TD e-series funds. What investments do you currently hold?

I will be explaining all of this in my book about to launch in a month and a half (or earlier). 🙂

Right now I am dabbling in individual stocks but for beginners, I’d suggest index funds.

The Budgeting Tool

About Me

I am a wealth-obsessed, style-focused, minimalist.

I got out of $60,000 of debt in 18 months with The Budgeting Tool which I now sell online and donate its net proceeds to charity, along with The Investing Tool.

I've also authored two books: Start a Blog Like a Boss - Making $1000 USD a month & Invest your Money Like a Boss - In 4 Hours a Year.

I earn like a princess when I work but am trying hard to live like a duchess instead by not spending all of it.

The rest of the time I relax and enjoy the time off by traveling, although traveling has been on hold lately with the arrival of Little Bun, my rambunctious, ever-hungry little boy.

Welcome.
