THE COUNT: 19 JACKETS IN TOTAL
I really went whole hog on the moto jacket and blazer thing this year. Luckily, some of it was thrifted, and what I did buy at retail, I tried very hard to get on sale (50% off the higher-end designer pieces).
THE OVERVIEW OF JACKETS & COATS
3 ZARA FAUX SUEDE MOTO FLOWING JACKETS in BLACK, BROWN and TAUPE
Similar here, and it’s a runner up for being the most leather-like. I like the warm cognac shade.
Similar here and I am so surprised that I liked the colour on me as much as I did. It’s a nice neutral.
I loved this jacket so much that I got it in all the colours: black, brown and taupe. The taupe one is actually surprisingly versatile, and I have worn it more than I thought I would, as it is a pretty taupe pinkish colour.
The black one has black zippers, so I kept it just as is:
With the other two, I ended up taking scissors to it and cutting off the zipper section because it was in black and totally threw me off.
I tried to keep it smooth and straight, but I guess I should have used a cutter and done it with a ruler.. oh wells. 🙂
The taupe one before (you can see the black zipper that drove me mad):
And after. Nice right? I think we call that edge ‘raw’:
Then this is the only picture I got of the cognac one that I fixed:
MAKEITMINT KHAKI GREEN COTTON FIELD JACKET
Exact jacket here and anyone who is a US 6 should take a Medium, and anyone below a US 6, take the small. The shoulders fit just right in the Medium on me.
This is one of the first pieces I bought in 2016, and it fits in perfectly in my wardrobe.
I took it in a Medium for my US 6 shoulders, and it is larger in the body, and I just cinched it, so it looked really good.
I wore it quite often, repeating the same outfits, and wearing it just in the way I intended, with and without distressed jeans, and over sweaters.
This is the outfit I had seen in the book Berlin Street Style, and was obsessed with, so I re-created it by getting a green field jacket & cuffing my jeans:
Then I wore it casually all summer; love the pockets.
CLUB MONACO GIDEON TRENCH IN NAVY BLUE
I scored this one for 50% off, and I couldn’t be happier. It really is a perfect, flowy trench, and I like the dark navy blue a lot.
It looks great over anything, as a longer jacket, and I can’t wait to bust it out when Spring arrives again. I particularly love this Golden Gladiator outfit I created:
5 X MASSIMO DUTTI BLAZERS IN VARIOUS FABRICS
I also hit the Massimo Dutti sales and with 20% to 50% off, I got their Slim Fit jackets which are perfect for my body – I fit the shoulders at a US 6, and the rest of the body is perfectly tailored, as it cuts in for my US 4 shape.
I took it in 5 different cuts and styles this year. I wear these blazers constantly like jackets, and I feel rather unfinished without any kind of topper, so this polishes an outfit comfortably (they are VERY comfy):
Grey Belted Melange Wool Jacket
Sold out, similar here, and the belt is really great to cinch in a waist.
I particularly love the charcoal grey, the mixed tweed look of it, and the belted wrap style which I can totally rock with pencil skirts. It looks formal without being too conservative.
Did I mention the AWESOME POCKETS on the side? OMG.
Beige Wool Blazer
This jacket is a gorgeous, cream wool. I love how it fits and falls, and it is of the same quality as the Banana Republic blazers. Now that I own it, it is SLIGHTLY itchy in the arms worn with a tank top, but not so much that I wanted to return it.
It’s a nice cream colour that goes well with whites in winter.
Navy Pinstriped Blazer
I didn’t own a navy pinstriped blazer, only a plain solid lighter navy blue blazer in jersey, but this navy pinstriped one checks the boxes of being super comfortable and stylish.
I wore it constantly during the Spring / Autumn seasons because it was a great topper.
Cream Linen Blazer
I wanted a linen blazer for summer and this one fit the bill. I don’t actually really like coloured linen, so I wanted it in a natural flax cream colour which I got. It is unlined which makes it even more comfortable to wear in summer as a topper.
Grey Flannel Blazer
This grey flannel blazer is super comfortable and a nice shade of grey that goes well with everything, particularly silk shirts!
I wore it all the time with jeans.
[THRIFTED] SANDRO BLACK LEATHER TUXEDO BLAZER
My first thrifted piece, I bought it secondhand and it is all black leather in a tuxedo lapel style. It is slightly too large for my body (fits a US8) but I didn’t know Sandro sizing, so I took the 2 thinking it would fit well.
I now know, I am a US 1, not a US 2, and the shoulders would have fit just fine.
Anyway, I have kept it, but am on the fence about it. I might resell it, but thus far, I kind of like the style, and if I put a sweater underneath, it looks quite chic and interesting.
COS LIGHT GREY MELANGE LONG WOOL BLAZER
EMERGHERD. I went to the COS store that opened in Montreal, and I fell in love with this light wool coat that looks like a car coat.
Simple blazer, slightly oversized, which is the M.O. (modus operandi) of the COS minimalist brand, and I love the huge pockets.
It’s great for Spring or Autumn, not so thick and warm, and a lighter fabric.
I don’t have any photos of it yet on me yet as I just bought it (literally last week on sale for 50% off), but it looks fab. Light.
PINK TARTAN CHARCOAL GREY CAR COAT
Another 50% off from Boxing Week!
It’s the coveted Pink Tartan car coat that I have been eying and hunting for so long, stalking it.
I took the XS (surprising, considering my shoulders), and it is SO soft and comfortable, it feels like cashmere but it is double bonded wool with some nylon instead. So soft and cuddly.
Even 50% off, it was $500, but it is fabulous. I love the inverted lapels as well, and this would be a great basic in my wardrobe.
Haven’t worn it yet, but I plan on wearing it during winter as a coat on warmer days.
MAISON SCOTCH BLACK WOOL OPEN LAPEL BLAZER
Another thrifted piece $1. Found on the ‘sale’ rack, and I rather like the long lapel of it in wool, with zippered pockets.
It is slightly itchy, but for $1 what can you expect? I like it, it looks nice and oversized and I need to learn how to wear it, maybe with a sweater underneath as an oversized piece.
It is really too large to wear on its own, or without a few layers underneath. It feels a little loose, but I love it.
RALPH LAUREN NAVY BLUE WOOL CRESTED BLAZER
Another thrifted piece, $7 on the rack. It is a stunning, super well made, high quality Ralph Lauren crested blazer. It is just stunning, the embroidery on the crest.
I also love the classic style and the smart gold buttons. It is really a nice piece.
I found it in a 4 P (petites) and surprisingly it fit my shoulders. Slightly tight, but not overly so that I feel uncomfortable.
JAEGER VINTAGE BLACK VELVET BLAZER
Thrifted piece, a vintage Jaeger black 100% cotton velvet jacket.
I don’t totally love it. It is a perfect fit in the shoulders, but the torso is too large and oversized. I feel like I want to keep it, but wear a sweater underneath.
I rather like the black velvet, but I need to learn how to wear it, am on the fence about it. Maybe if I tailored it? Ugh. I don’t know.
I belted it and loved the look though:
MEL EN STEL KHAKI GREEN CASHMERE BLAZER
A stunner of a blazer, made by an independent designer in New York City, it is a CASHMERE khaki green blazer with an unusual cut of a side button, and lined in SILK.
I got it on sale as well, during her winter sale, and it is just wonderful. It is super comfortable, loose, the sleeves are a little long but I don’t mind, and the pockets are deep.
ALL SAINTS KERR SUEDE QUILTED SHOULDERS BIKER MOTO JACKET IN MUSHROOM
Bought this in December, haven’t gotten it yet! Will let you know once I do via Instagram
Okay I finally got it and the colour is more like the Zara jacket in taupe but a slightly darker shade.
It looks a lot more like this shade, but slightly darker, about a shade or two:
What a nice colour.
I also really like the overall look of it, and as suspected, the quilted shoulder pads are different and sort of not my thing normally but it looks fine in a leather jacket.
It DOES size small however, I took a US 8 thinking that with my US 6 shoulders it would be slightly loose and perfect with a sweater underneath.
It JUST. FIT.
I mean, it’s not tight, the US 8 is more of a US 6. You need to seriously size UP in the jacket, and if you want it looser, size up TWICE.
I can see why people bought & returned it so often…… 😛 Thankfully I sized up already just by chance, and I plan on keeping this one.
Seeing as it only goes up to Size 10, I would say anyone above a US 8 would be completely sized out.
ALL SAINTS WYATT BRAIDED BIKER MOTO JACKET IN PETROL BLUE
This suede jacket is gorgeous. Petrol Blue put me off but it’s really like a blue tinted grey, which is stunning.
The braid at the bottom for the belt is stunning, the shoulders have a cool braided detail too.
Very soft and comfortable. I wore it eagerly as soon as I got it, having taken a US 8, I could fit a thick fisherman’s sweater underneath comfortably for a warm winter day.
- Thrifted: 4
- Retailed: 15 (11 of which were on sale, and 5 of those on sale were 50% off)
MOST PROUD OF?
Arrrg… it’s a toss up between my thrifted Ralph Lauren navy blue wool crested blazer for $7..
…or my Pink Tartan charcoal grey car coat which feels so soft and cuddly and was 50% off (stalked, seriously I stalked it):
I really amped up my leather wardrobe along with blazers, getting all the basic neutrals I need for any outfit imaginable. I’m also quite pleased with my thrifted blazers, although I need to figure out how to wear them properly, belted, perhaps?
I’m also way more into oversized pieces now. Who knew? What’s up with that?
Want to know what else I bought?
Stay tuned for the rest of my 2016 Year-end What I bought roundups. I am doing each category.
