Lots and lots of eye candy in winter coats

Being from Canada, land of the cold and polar bears, I have a small.. teeny.. tiny.. obsession with coats.

I love coats.

It is the MAIN fashion item you see on others when you’re a Canadian because we’re always bundled up in them.

(Next is scarves, hats, boots, and gloves.)

So it’s really not all that incredible that every winter, I get misty-eyed and ogle coats of all kind for Autumn or for Winter.

Here are a few of my (outrageous) online ogles. Don’t even bother with the pricing of them, because it goes from $600 – $2200 per coat.

I just like ogling.

Burberry Winter White Military Oversized Coat

White is so impractical especially if you take the subway and sit on dirty seats, but it’s just so.. so.. pretty.

So. Pretty.

..and so very expensive ($1995!)

It also looks very much like my black Regimental trench coat, just without the double buckles on the cuffs and a different collar.

MICHAEL KORS DOUBLE BREASTED CRIMSON RED COAT

A crimson red coat? You had me at crimson.

EMERSON FRY MAJOR PARKA IN COAL

Then you have the kind of slouchy, chic parka version. This one in particular caught my eye.

(Actually the whole outfit is perfection.)

It’s just so casual but lovely.

GREY WRAP COAT

I am not really a fan of the oversized coat look because I am too short (5’5″) to really pull it off without looking like a child wearing mommy’s or daddy’s hand-me-down coat.

.. but I do like the look on others especially when they use it like a sweater and pose in a certain way (as shown above).

CARVEN CAMEL WOOL BELTED COAT

Frickin’ expensive. More expensive than a Burberry coat but it looks so nice and belted!

Soft, cuddly, luxurious… all the things you want in a coat on a crisp Autumn day.

I’d wear this even into my late 90s!

THEYSKEN’S THEORY TIE BELTED WOOL COAT

There’s a similar version by Theysken’s Theory in grey:

And it also comes in white!

MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA CLASSIC BOILED WOOL PEACOAT

And who could leave out the classic peacoat? I especially like this one because it’s in navy, and doesn’t have a lot of frills.

It also looks very simple, as the buttons are not in gold, and there aren’t cuffs or anything flashy.

SMYTHE CLASSIC PEACOAT

But if you wanted something with a little pop, Smythe came out with this fabulous peacoat this season:

I really like the pockets, the gold buttons, the larger epaulettes, then the pop of a different colour at the cuffs, and those slits near the torso make it more than just a standard, ordinary, run of the mill peacoat.

Plus Smythe is CANADIAN!

SMYTHE REEFER COAT IN CAMEL

Of course, the very best, I saved for last. It’s that amazing Smythe coat I bought recently, the Reefer Coat in Camel:

Ahh.. coats. The one good thing about colder weather.

These coats are all gorgeous, but I feel like they are not going to be warm enough for some of the winters…more of event coats as a previous comment suggested! I’ll stick with my down coat for now until some day in the future when I actually have “events” to go to!

I love the Emerson parka coat! Charcoal is my favorite color for clothing. It looks great with colors, black, cream and quite lovely with army green too (in my non-coat climate of Hawaii, one of my favorite combos is a charcoal tank with army green chinos by Current Elliott). I do like that very casual look, the whole outfit too. I have been to Canada (Toronto) but alas during the summer many years ago when no coats were required (although it was still much chillier with dryer air than here).

I also love looks that are layered and cozy. The Burberry is lovely but oh my wouldn’t it get dirty? That one is for those with a car service 🙂

I also love the huge cocoon coat thing I’m seeing more of lately and I’m only 5’1″. I say if you like it, do it. Main thing is the coat fits you well in the shoulder and then cocoons around you.

Charcoal is a colour I am missing in my coat wardrobe (HAH!) that and cream/ivory but that’s impractical.

The Burberry coat is a coat you only wear twice a year if that, to “events”. Gosh that’s expensive…

I have fantasy shopped on the Burberry site before and love their coats so I would pick that one. Reality always calls me and says that none of them would be warm enough for recess supervision out on the prairies during the winter.

@jolie: Yep. You need a Canada Goose for that.

Basically these coats are only cute for short periods of time.. but I try my best to wear them as often as possible.

    • Helen

Popping in to say that Canada Goose is not the only option in quality down parkas. Now that they are majority American owned, I’m wary about their future.

My research has turned up the following Made in Canada brands, all with online shopping options:
      – Canuk
      – CDN Spirit
      – OSC Cross
      – Nobis
      – Quartz Nature

CDN Spirit and OSC Cross are part of the same company from Toronto, while the others are from Quebec. Canuk and Quartz Nature allow you to choose the type of fur trim on the hood, which is nice when real fur is a turn off.

Love the white Burberry and the red Michael Kors. But I have too many coats as it is, having received 2 from hubby for Christmas this year. But I sure do like them.

  • CorianneM

oh the white Burberry coat is so pretty! But I’m with you on the impracticalness of white clothes. On top of dirty subways, I’m also terribly clumsy, so white/light clothes will get a coffee stain or something at some point 😉

Love all the winter coats you posted here! They’re so classic. I can totally imagine them wearing for years and years on end every winter!

  • eemusings

I LOVE a good peacoat. I own a plain black trench and a grey slightly patterned peacoat (at least I think it is, it’s double breasted and shortish), though I only really need them for a couple of months in the year.

Noticed tons of leather jackets while I was in Toronto.

  • Sense

I am totally on the same page! I adore coats. Of all kinds. I once bought the same peacoat in three different colours: black, ivory, and pea-green. I don’t even live in a very cold place…I think I just love how structured and pulled-together they can make you look. And you can wear the same one every single day and no one gives you crap about it. 🙂

I was in San Francisco recently and stalked a girl down the street because she was wearing the KAH-YUTE-EST coat I’ve ever seen. It was a red hip-length peacoat-poncho hybrid. The shape of it was perfect–all flared out at the bottom like a poncho, but it had full sleeves. It is so hard to describe, but I WANT IT. I lost her at a road crossing and have been desperately trying to find a similar coat in stores and online to no avail.

@Sense: Well you can wear a t-shirt underneath, throw on a good coat and you look polished.

Peacoat poncho? This sounds interesting. Was it like a cape?

      • Sense

@save. spend. splurge.: I guess so? It had sleeves, though–I haven’t found anything like it online. I’m starting to think I made it up, or am exaggerating, but when I saw it, it was like love at first sight. I’m OBSESSED.

  • suzie ku

I love coats too! But in Perth (Australia), the winters are so mild that sometimes all you need a cardigan or sweater. I love the idea of being able to be bundled up in a warm coat. Love that grey wrapped one!

    • save. spend. splurge.

@suzie ku: Maybe a leather coat would be a better buy 🙂

I do love the idea of a warm bundly coat as well, but you need weather at least 0C to about 10C to wear it comfortably without needing a sweater as well. At least.. that’s in my case.
