Save. Spend. Splurge.

Getting to know more about me

1. If you could change something about yourself, what it be and why?

My very quick temper.

2. What’s the farthest you’ve been from home?

Does Singapore count? That was a longggg flight (about 24 hours of flying).

3. What is your motto?

Nothing is permanent. This too shall pass.

4. What are your hobbies?

Aside from blogging about money, style and life?

I travel, read a lot and am slightly obsessed with the foodie world but am lousy (read: lazy) at cooking anything, so I’d rather pay for it.

I also like doing yoga, but it is not something I’m fanatic about.

5. What is your favourite ice cream flavour?

Pistachio ice-cream from Maison Berthillon in Paris.

(I know that is really specific but it’s true)

Otherwise, Haagen-Dazs makes a very delicious vanilla, or Ben and Jerry’s has a nice Pistachio ice cream as well.

Photograph-Food-Pistachios-Eat-Snack

6. What two things could you not do when you were a child, but you can do now?

1. Eat cake for breakfast.

2. Buy whatever I want, when I want.

7. If you could travel anywhere in the world – where would you go and why?

I traveled the world in 2011 and went everywhere I pretty much wanted to go, except for Japan because the tsunami hit 2 weeks before we were about to book our tickets and go.

I’m a bit paranoid about the radiation (I know no one else is, all my friends are still going), so it is on my list to go in about 20 years.

8. Have you ever met a famous person?

Does Preet Banerjee count? I see him on TV sometimes and he is a super nice guy in real life.

If not, how about seeing Rod Stewart on the plane once in first class from Miami to New York City in 2012?

9. What is your least favourite thing about yourself?

Didn’t I already mention this!? My quick temper!!!

(See.. I told you.)

10. One word that describes you?

Multi-tasker.

11. If you were a crayon, what colour would you be & why?

Red.

I’ve always liked red, but not those nasty kinds of brick or odd shades of reds.

I want to be a deep, ruby, crimson red.

12. What is the weather like right now where you are?

-2 celsius (28.4 F) with lots of wet snow.

13. How tall are you?

5’5″

14. When you were little – what did you want to do “when you grew up?”

Be a teacher. I’ve since realized I have almost no patience so this was not a good career choice.

15. Toilet paper. Roll with paper coming off the top or bottom?

Off the top.

When it’s off the bottom it’s just annoying to try and catch the paper to pull it, or it ends up reaching the floor or being stuck against the wall.

Someone, anyone, PLEASE explain to me how that’s a better option if it rolls off from the bottom.

16. Favourite sport you like to watch or participate in?

I like watching soccer (only the big games like the World Cup), but am useless at playing sports.

17. What kind of food do you prefer eating when you are out?

Tasty food that is well made and not too expensive.

If you must have specifics, I really like foie gras, chicken fettucine alfredo pasta, vietnamese noodle pho, japanese ramen and burritos.

18. Last movie you watched?

That I can remember and liked? Le Petit Nicolas.

19. Would you like to be famous?

NO.

20. What book are you reading?

What am I NOT reading these days?

At this very moment, I am reading:

21. If you had $5 million to spend in 5 days, but with the clause you could not spend any of it on yourself or your family, what would you do with it?

Go around observing people in the city, and randomly hand out $100,000 cheques to good people who do altruistic things for others around them without having expected anything in return.

22. If you knew that you could try any kind of work/employment and that you would not fail, what would you attempt doing?

I’m stumped on this one.

I think I’d want to try my hand at something to do with fashion, like creating my own clothing line.

Love this list! And I also too love eating cake for breakfast.

Thanks for sharing, it’s always interesting to get to know more about bloggers. Can I ask, is that book any good? It sounds interesting enough. And toilet paper definitely from the top.

  • tomatoketchup

I spent a lot of time in my life contemplating the toilet paper situation. The logistic solution is that it depends on the height of the toilet paper roll. If the roll is under a person’s shoulder level, it’s much more ergonomic to have the loose paper coming off the top so one doesn’t have to contort one’s arm to reach underneath the roll. If the roll is above a person’s shoulder level (uncommon except in airports and other public places), then it’s easier to grab the loose paper from the bottom.

So for most situations, off the top is the way to go. Unless you’re a knuckle dragging neanderthal; then go ahead and hang it the wrong way 🙂

@tomatoketchup: … I never even thought about that! *impressed* You really have been studying up on this whole situation!!

For me, off the top is the only way to do it especially now as a pregnant woman stumbling into the bathroom because of a baby kicking her bladder, while trying to stay in that perfect little dream zone…

I agree with #3 (everything is transient!) and #15, and LOL on #9. 🙂

  • Tania

I eat Key Lime Pie occasionally for breakfast and am usually reading four books at once 🙂

I’ve always wanted to go to Japan too and Australia.

Very nice to learn a little bit more about you.

  • MelD

Oh definitely, deep cherry, crimson, ruby red 😉

And that book looks fascinating… I still haven’t seen Le Petit Nicholas, a bit cautious because I loved the books as a child!

      Ruby ruby red 🙂

Le Petit Nicholas was an excellent movie. I was laughing quite hard in many spots (after pausing a few times while watching it with BF to clarify what the true meaning of what they said was in French).

I’m with you with the radiation thing as well. I have a fishery related job and luckily folks from my office normally get opportunities to attend training programs in japan, so I always thought I’d get to Japan that way. When I saw the nuclear reactor meltdown however, I started imagining how the waste would accumulate in the marine life and generally percolate through the environment. Now I’m totally paranoid and want to avoid that part of world. Shame cause I love to travel and learn about new cultures, who knows, maybe I’ll get over my paranoia

I don’t think I’ll get over my paranoia. I’m too cautious now as I am at a young age. I have plenty of time to go when I am older, and who knows.. maybe I’ll go at the right time, or it just wasn’t my time to go when I decided to.

I kind of believe in fate / karma that prevented me from going. 🙂

I am also currently trying to avoid things made in Japan or food from Japan just because of the radiation. It would be awful to take such chances and then to not be able to see my children grow up and live.

Oh great, we have the same motto, I always put it in my mind, “This too shall pass”. And I’m eating my favorite “rocky road” ice cream flavor right now. 🙂

  • Dear Debt

Great getting to know you a bit better! I’d love to go to Singapore and Japan. I can also have a temper sometimes, but mostly I just get irritated easily.

    • save. spend. splurge.

      Thank you!!

I’d go to Japan over Singapore if you had to choose between the two.

When I say “temper” I mean “irrational irritation that I cannot control”. My explosive temper has somewhat mellowed as I’ve gotten older…

  • AdinaJ

I love your answer to #21.

    • save. spend. splurge.

I think it’d be awesome to have so much money to be able to do that.

Some random kid would give up his seat to an elderly person (OR A PREGNANT ONE!) and I’d follow them off the train, then hand over a cheque discreetly.

Or a cashier would be ultra nice to someone at the counter.. or a TTC bus driver waits for someone to sit down so that they don’t jerk the bus and they fall down..

All these things are nice things I see and think people should be rewarded for them if they could, even if they did it just because they’re nice people.

  • Lindsey @ Cents & Sensibility

These are fun to do and you find out the weirdest things about people. I am a roll off the top kind of girl, myself. Cheers!

  • mattny

I think the main reason to have the tp come off the back is if you have cats. its harder for them to pull all the paper onto the floor. 🙂

  • Tracy

Don’t wait 20 years to go to Japan! Lots of things can happen between now and then. 🙁 So beautiful!!

  • Charles@gettingarichlife.com

I saw your tweets about why Chinese don’t say I love you and your replies are you of Asian descent.

  • eemusings

Fun – might do this on the blog at some point!

I seriously can’t pick a fave ice cream though.
