2016 Year in Review: What I bought – The Jewellery Edition
THE COUNT: 28 PIECES OF JEWELLERY ADDED
THE OVERVIEW OF JEWELLERY
My two major trends this year? Rose Gold + Cuffs.
I really really hit hard on the rose gold trend (so pretty, and flattering!) and Cuffs made a major appearance in my wardrobe.
I think jewellery is where I really hit my stride this year, believe it or not.
I got rid of a shedload of jewellery and have consciously been trying to only add things that aren’t duplicates in my wardrobe (no small feat, I assure you), or very interesting pieces.
GOLD STUDDED CUFF
Super similar here.
Only $9! On final clearance at Holt Renfrew, I can see why people passed it over, it’s heavy and a little tarnished on the edges, but it only added to its golden distressed allure for me. I’ve worn it often, it feels heavy, and is stretchy, and love the feel of it.
VINTAGE TEAL FLOWER BROOCH 1940S
I am a sucker for vintage pieces particularly well-made ones, and this one has individual flowers that move. O_o You simply can’t find this kind of quality these days, it’s from the 1940s, and the paint has chipped off a little here and there, but it isn’t a big deal.
KATE SPADE METRO WATCH IN VACHETTA LEATHER
I have eyed this watch for a good year or two before buying it on sale on eBay for half the price. I love that the dials show the name of the hour rather than a number.
ROSEFIELD METALLIC ROSE GOLD MESH WATCH
Another stunning piece, a little on the thin side (not weighty or heavy), but very very pretty, and it adds something to any outfit when I am too lazy for anything else.
GOLD COLLAR NECKLACE
Another final sale clearance piece for $20 I think at Holt Renfrew, and it is a big, thick Cleopatra-like collar which is a real statement piece, but etched and not at all too fake or shiny.
FERNANDA SIBILIA MODERNIST CUFF
Exact in gold here.
I stalk her pieces. She is an incredible artist, and if I had to only buy jewellery from one person, it’d be her. I love everything she makes, it’s totally ME.
2 X COS ROSE GOLD BANGLES
I bought these two on sale during Boxing Week and I needed two so that they would jangle together nicely and look pretty. One just seemed so plain.
TURQUOISE GOLD METAL HAMMERED CUFF
Almost exact here, this one has no stone and is just a cuff, and I like the openness of this version, but the stones vary obviously as they’re natural. This one is all patina’d but has gold leaf over it. VERY pretty. It also comes in a bolder cuff which I love.
Another bold piece, it was really the Year of the Cuff for me, and I like the stone.
ANTHROPOLOGIE GOLD INTERWOVEN CUFF
Another cuff, but a delicate piece, and I have to really tighten it to my wrist (I have tiny bones). This one gets a lot of compliments for its tastefulness, which is normally not my thing (good & delicate taste, I mean) because I like stuff that is a lot more modern and bolder.
ALKEMIE SAGE LEAF CUFF
Exact here. Run, don’t walk to buy it. It is a STUNNER.
Recycled brass by an independent L.A. designer scored on major sale? Check and CHECK.
I bought the Gingko Leaf cuff too (my favourite tree!) but it was really scratchy and I did NOT love the feel of it on my wrist. This sage cuff is a lot prettier, it’s smooth and not at all itchy or scratchy.
ALKEMIE RULER CUFF
Exact here but in silver only. They’re independent, so you can always ask for brass, if you want.
This is a thinner cuff but I scored it on major sale, below what it would cost for wholesalers, and I like the unusual ruler-style of it
ALKEMIE ASPEN GROVE CUFF
This is another one of my all-time favourite cuffs, scored on sale. The aspen grove is a stunning piece of work in SOLID brass, and if you must choose only one, buy this one first. It’s thick, heavy and a very pretty piece.
MULTI-BANDED GOLD AND SILVER CUFF
Got it from Anthropologie on a deep discount. I liked the gold and silver together and I just stack it on my arm with my other delicate cuffs.
BANANA REPUBLIC GOLD LACE CUFF
BR had some solid jewellery offerings this season and this one is a pretty gold lace cuff that I liked. Something simple. I layer it with other cuffs.
ORIGAMI PAPER / WASHI PAPER DOUBLE-FACED NECKLACE
I can’t remember who the designer is, but this one is pressed flowers (which I also own) and is way prettier.
For $0.05 you can’t go wrong. Found it in a thrift bin, I know the designer is an independent one, I just can’t remember their name, but I remember seeing their necklaces in Old Montreal and wanting one.
TOPSHOP GOLD, ROSE GOLD AND SILVER NECKLACE
I liked the mixed metal look of it, but I may rip this necklace apart and create something new with it, for some reason it turns me off sometimes, and I think it’s the oval shape or something.
2 X SARAH PACINI DRUSY RINGS
I couldn’t decide on which colour to buy, so I got both. Great decision, they’re very pretty, solid, statement rings with some bling.
MODCLOTH NO CONQUEST CONQUEROR RING
MODCLOTH WORLD MAP NO PLACE LIKE ROAM NECKLACE – PRINTED HEXAGON NECKLACE
Modcloth has the best wanderlust / travel pieces, and this one is the map of the world in a hexagonal shape. HOW. COOL.
MODCLOTH WORLD MAP THERE’S A MAP FOR THAT NECKLACE
Another map necklace, obviously. Even men like this one when I wear it.
WANDERLUST CUFF IN ROSE GOLD
Rose Gold was my colour this year, along with cuffs as the style, and this one brings out my travelling spirit animal.
It obviously pairs best with my BR Goddess Maxi dress in cobalt blue.
WANDERLUST RING IN ROSE GOLD
I had to get the ring to match my cuff, obviously.
3 X RINGS (2 ROSE GOLD, ONE SILVER)
Got these from H&M, but I kind of regret it. They’re cheap and I rarely wear them because they are so plain and boring. What to do…..
BANANA REPUBLIC BUTTERFLY STONE RING
Similar but very on the nose here and here is one I wouldn’t mind wearing, butterfly or not!
I like how pretty it is. Probably not a good reason for buying a ring, but it’s real stone and I like the colours.
VIVIENNE WESTWOOD ARMOUR RING
How could I NOT? My goodness. It is a really stunning ring, and unusual, not everyone’s taste, my friend was not impressed with how it looked, but then again, she’s more the delicate jewellery type. I think it’s awesome.
Retailed: All 28 of them! Some came as a ring pack, and others were below $10, so it’s really a mixed bag.
MOST PROUD OF?
I really really love my Alkemie pieces, particularly my sage cuff:
…and my aspen grove cuff…
But I also am a sucker for bold statements, and I wore my conqueror ring a lot.
And finally, the Sibilia Modernist Cuff is a stunner:
