Inspired by Todd’s post on American Debt Project, he lists out the 4 things that would make him feel rich, and I thought I’d share what would make me feel rich(er).
Let me be clear that I already feel rich.
Who wouldn’t with my current lifestyle?
Plenty of time to laze around (worked less than 50% of my career so far), 6-digit savings in the bank and the first number is not a “1″ (although the way I am going I am not sure how long this will last)… I’d be a downright fool to feel otherwise.
I don’t worry about money, I don’t worry about time, and I stress very lightly about finding another contract, but deep down inside, I know I am all right, and that kind of mental security is something that even millions can’t buy for some folks.
Still, the question made me think because I wondered what it would take to make me feel richer than I already am now, and the #1 thing that popped into my mind is:
Letting myself take a cab once in a while.
You’re going to roll your eyes, because how can a girl who spends over a grand on a trench coat, and countless thousands of dollars on clothing each month (read: all my spending posts), feel like she can’t take a $20 – $30 cab to get home?
It’s because I psychologically cannot bring myself to spend that money for what I deep down, feel like is a frivolous expense.
An expense that will not last or give me lasting satisfaction, but leave a bill in its wake.
I don’t drink, so it’s not even a question of my having a car (which I don’t) and having to take a cab home for safety (which I would do), but it’s more that I know it costs $2.65 per Toronto TTC token, or sometimes “free” because I have a monthly Toronto metropass, and to send $20 – $30 just to get home 40 minutes earlier, doesn’t settle well in my stomach.
It’s sheer laziness and convenience to me, which in fact, is the definition of luxury.
The laziness to be able to spend money that I will never see again after 40 minutes which sounds silly, but at least in clothes, I can wear my money over and over again, and if I got a facial or a massage, I would feel the difference in my skin and my body for weeks afterwards.
I just can’t spend that money because I feel like I am not yet rich enough to take a cab, but it also begs the question: when will I ever be rich enough to allow myself to mentally take a cab?
The answer is if I have tens of millions in the bank, and if I were out late one night (late for me, being past 8 p.m.), I would give in once in a while and indulge in a cab ride home.
Kind of reminds me of Vanessa’s post on the cost of celebrity, because she talks about former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell taking private cabs and cars around the city of London for 17 years, which to me, would really be the ultimate luxury (a driver!!).
OTHER THINGS THAT WOULD MAKE ME FEEL RICH
- Getting a weekly massage and facial — $300 a week, AT LEAST
- Going into a store and buying absolutely everything I desire — Believe it or not, I actually hold myself back when I shop
- Having gourmet meals made daily for me by a private 5-star chef — Although BF is an excellent cook, so…. well
